What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $117,000.00. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid model workplace- 3 days in office / 2 days at home. This balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

What You'll Do

Denver's Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) Project Delivery Administration (PDA) is seeking a professional in the transportation industry to serve as a Design Engineer within the Transportation Implementation Division.

The Transportation Implementation Division is made up of separate Design, Construction, and Specialty Services groups. The primary function of the Design Engineer position is to manage consultant teams that are working on infrastructure and mobility projects from concept to final design. The projects originate from various sources including the Denver Moves Everyone plan, Vision Zero Road Safety Audits, federal safety grants, Bond Initiatives, Signal Programming or other planning level efforts. The Design group coordinates closely with the Construction and Specialty services groups along with our Operations team. Our team also works with other City divisions and agencies, design consultants, community stakeholders, utility companies, and others to implement projects.

Examples of work delivered through this Division include:

  • Active transportation & mobility projects (e.g., Intersection Rebuilds, roadway reconstruction, pedestrian facilities, ITS & signals, transit infrastructure, sidewalks, etc.)
  • Transportation safety projects (e.g., Vision Zero, Neighborhood Transportation Management Plans (NTMP), Safe Routes to School (SRTS), Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), etc.)
  • Large, complex transportation projects (e.g., Morrison Rd Reconstruction, Buchtel Multimodal, Washington St Reconstruction, etc.)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) programs and regulatory projects
  • Ongoing citywide deferred maintenance projects (e.g. traffic signal reconstruction)

In the role of Design Engineer, you will have the ability to make a direct impact in bettering our city by implementing safe and equitable transportation mobility projects and programs that benefit all residents and the traveling public.

As an Engineer in the Design group your duties will include:

  • Serving as a project manager on diverse portfolio of transportation projects (corridor redesign, roadways, bridges, sidewalks, bicycle and transit facilities, intersection geometrics, pavement markings, traffic signs, and traffic signals and traffic operations)
  • Leading challenging project roles, including project management (ex. control of scope, schedule, budget, consultant management, etc.), design, document review, construction support
  • Representing as a public face with the community using effective communication and strong business relationship building skills
  • Fostering collaborative and innovative partnerships with city, regional, state, and federal agencies, community groups, industry organizations and the non-profit and private sectors to advocate continuous transit and transportation innovations. Occasional after-hours work for community meetings, special events support, and field observations may be required depending on project needs

What You'll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience designing, reviewing, and preparing bid documents and/or works orders for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering best practices using current design standards, guidelines, and manuals
  • A comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and City agency policies, standards, and systems
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills as this role interfaces with multiple internal and external stakeholders during the planning, design and construction phases of a project

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Experience Requirement:Four (4) years experience as an entry level Engineer
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements
  • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application
  • Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
