Job Description:

NOTE: This single vacancy is posted in more than one grade level and will be filled based on commensurate education and/or relevant experience. It is written at the lower grade level and expectations increase with the higher grade level.

Engineer Associate (entry level), grade 5

Engineer (intermediate level x2 yrs. exp.) grade 6

Engineer (intermediate level x4 yrs. Exp.) grade 7


Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing intermediate level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.


  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned station equipment:

Knowledge lead for specific station equipment and technologies; answering all technical, design, and application questions; creating; leading SME team meetings and training support SMEs'; supporting all aspects of the equipment such as design application, installation and testing, maintenance practices, and long term support and operation; write, review, and contribute to the development of system-wide specifications, guidelines, and processes.

  • Equipment Contract bid events and support:

Development of technical RFI, RFP, and bid templates; leading technical evaluation of bids; creating recommendation of award for management review; coordinating drawing review, approval, and implementation into design standards; specifications; developing catalog templates and ordering guides; participate in contract maintenance and lifecycle activities.

  • Engineering support for Asset Management:

Support of all asset management systems including, IPS and Asset Health Monitoring and training for engineering and field groups; participate in development of studies for systematic asset management and rehab programs for major station equipment and assist with equipment sparing needs; ensure data quality of Asset Management systems and provide updates as standards change.

  • Technical liaison between equipment vendors and Station Engineering:

Get quotes, drawings, or other technical information as required by different project needs; facilitate communication and support for engineering and all other stakeholders; lead failure analysis of station equipment and champion lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives

  • NERC Compliance relevant to Station Engineering:

Participate and support NERC compliance activities; review and update FAC-008 Methodology guides and document; understand and champion AEP's FAC-008 Methodology basis and details; support Transmissions FAC-008 Compliance.

  • Technical Proficiency of PCE and TLE Standards:

Understand PCE and TLE standards from a high-level and how they interact with SE standards; familiarity with standards, codes, and regulations relevant to the area of assignment; understanding of Control Diagrams, Schematics and Manufacturer Outline Drawings.

IDC/Advanced Engineering Support Team Each of the positions in the Station Standards Engineering job family is responsible for performing engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient manner for the accomplishment of assigned objectives. The following are activities that will be performed, but not limited to: * Provide support on the Integrated Design & Construction (IDC) tool development, process implementation and training of AEP employees in the utilization of this software. This is a similar process to Building Information Modeling (BIM). * Leader in driving change for implementing new technology and workflows within organizations * Research applications of AR/VR (Augmented & Virtual Reality) technology in station design/construction. * Lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) assignments in various topics such as Surge Arresters, AC and DC Station Service, Bus Ampacities, capacitors, circuit breakers, fiber/equipment installation, etc. * Develop and deliver training sessions to station engineering staff for SME assignment topics. Support the station engineering staff, Transmission Field Services (TFS), Transmission Construction Representatives (TCR), Transmission and Distribution Planning, Operations, Telecommunications and Protection & Control and other groups by responding to technical questions, develop/deliver training sessions and leading SME team meetings. * Obtain information required to perform work from verbal communication, sketches, marked drawings, SME meeting feedback, field notes, vendors' catalogs, technical reference manuals and site visits. * Apply sound knowledge of electrical engineering theories/principles to areas of substation grounding studies, lightning shielding studies, lighting studies, insulation coordination studies, electromagnetic induction (induced voltage), grounded and ungrounded power system and station AC and DC service. * Participate and lead in professional association(s) such as IEEE, research, write and publish technical papers in IEEE and other power industry conferences as opportunities arise. * Interface with Station Engineering project teams, PCE Standards, Transmission and Distribution Planning, Transmission Operations, Telecommunication Engineering, Procurement, outsource engineering companies and field construction personnel to gain feedback to improve current standards and gain an understanding of the requirements for new standards. * Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in the AEP corporate policies. * Support the AEP Corporate Compliance policies * Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned American Electic Power New Albany OH
