KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Engineer is part of the Facilities team reporting to the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers. This is a full-time position that requires weekend work. The Engineer will oversee the performance and maintenance of equipment and machinery on the Island.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and manage building systems using installed BMS system and regularly review building performance against design goals and baseline benchmarks.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and routine inspections following manufacturer recommendations and operational experience and preventive maintenance plans in place.
  • Thoroughly clean machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling as necessary.
  • Oil and lubricate moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance.
  • Record and report damaged, worn, or broken parts immediately to supervisor.
  • Identify the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines.
  • Repair broken machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Clean, organize, inventory, stock, and otherwise maintain shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Be able to work independently or in a group on project-based work that may arise.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using multiple forms of communication including text, phone and email.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Collaborate with Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers regarding new products being added and modifications that will be required.
  • Initial Training hours 10am-6pm, M-F. Perm. schedule will be 10am-6pm, Su-Th.

Skills and Abilities:

  • 5+ years' experience of technical experience and operating building systems with a strong focus on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Experience in industrial, university, recreational, hospital or similar buildings preferred with package unit experience a plus.
  • Collaborative and team player - with the ability to build relationships and work closely with facility stakeholders and partners to ensure that all facilities are maintained to the highest standard and support all staff and programming needs.
  • Experience working with FDNY, DOB, and other government agency standards/codes. Working knowledge of OSHA Standards, and health and safety best practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) and video conferencing.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to read and manage work orders.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Availability to work early morning or late evening shifts, in addition to weekends and holidays.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
  • Must be able to work safely in an indoor and outdoor setting in various weather conditions.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Universal CFC certification required.
  • FDNY Q99 certification required.
  • Willingness to obtain additional certifications (i.e., A-35, S-12, S-13) as per the needs of the organization.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience required.

Salary: $55.96 per hour.

Location and Schedule: All positions are located on Governors Island. This position is in-person, five days a week.
