Expired Job

Vox Media Washington , DC 20319

Posted 4 months ago

Vox Media employees thrive on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology and the world around them. The Vox Media house of networks includes industry-leading media forces like SB Nation, Eater, The Verge, Vox, Curbed, Recode, Racked and Polygon, and reaches an audience of hundreds of millions, generating over a billion content views each month.

We created Vox to solve a problem in the news business. We've spent too much time in the media burying the important under the new. We want to explain the news to people by giving them the relevant context they need, when they need it and where they already are.

As part of these efforts, we're launching a new vertical looks at the world through the lens of effective altruism. We'll be looking at the big, hairy problems we face and the most efficient ways of solving them, and covering neglected stories about subjects that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of millions of humans (and animals).

We're hiring an Engagement Manager to work with a new team of writers on this beat. The ideal candidate will be an extremely strong writer, highly creative, and passionate about online communities and facilitating discussion. You should be energized by topics like global poverty and global health, animal welfare, health sciences, and global catastrophic risks that pose a serious threat to humanity

Someone who is incredibly familiar with the effective altruism community, a self-starter, tenacious, not afraid to ask questions, a good team player, and thrives on change in an evolving digital landscape will excel in this role.

What you'll do:

  • Help write and produce a newsletter looking at the world through the lens of effective altruism

  • Iterate on a strategy for engaging readers in productive discussions related to our stories

  • Be an ambassador for our audience and help ensure that our content is relevant, by monitoring trending conversations in effective altruism and related communities

  • Provide feedback to writers and editors on search and social headlines and share images

  • Work with the Vox engagement team to create content to accompany stories, like graphics, charts, video clips, and story threads

  • Be an ambassador of our coverage to effective altruism communities, with the goal of increasing awareness of our work

  • You may also have an opportunity to write posts for the new section, as time and interest permits

What you'll bring:

  • Familiar with effective altruism and the idea of cause prioritization

  • Strong creative writing skills and the ability to break down complex topics into concise social copy

  • Able to identify and curate content for a newsletter and the ability to write interesting copy for that newsletter for a broad audience

  • Knowledge of online community management best practices

  • Incredible attention to detail and intolerance for errors

  • Experience with Campaign Monitor, newsletter production, or SEO optimization a plus

The Engagement Manager will work primarily with a team of writers and editors we're building for this new vertical, but will sit on the Vox Engagement team, a group of creators and strategists who work to bridge the gap between the Vox audience and our content.

This is a full-time role based in Washington, DC.

To apply, please submit the following items:

  • Your resume

  • A cover letter, written in the form of an email newsletter. Please tell us about one of the topics or concepts of effective altruism that you're currently following, and any effective altruism communities that you participate in.

  • Links to three pieces of your writing. These could be old newsletters you've written, college papers, blog posts, news articles anything that gives us an idea of your writing style.

Vox values thinkers, creatives and obsessives from all backgrounds. Our teams are looking to hire the right person not the right resume. We encourage those with diverse and nontraditional experience to apply.
