Position Summary

The Energy Specialist will lead the development and tracking of UIC's Strategic Energy Management (SEM) Program and ensure that Utilities and Energy Services (UES) projects are implemented strategically and cost-effectively. Drive the overall analysis of energy performance opportunities for UIC and provide reporting on the impact of those projects to leadership, including cost and labor savings and other metrics requested. Assist in greenhouse gas reporting, develop staff training, provide data for communications, manage the allocation of Green Revolving Fund resources, plan implementation of the Energy and Carbon Plan, and investigate new technologies and best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead the Strategic Energy Management program at UIC. Identify, propose and implement strategic energy savings programs, calculate ROI and demonstrate savings, reportable with agreed-upon metrics to UIC leadership.

Manage the allocation of Green Revolving Funds, assign projects, manage projects and identify savings resultant from projects. Manage energy projects of all types and make recommendations on prioritization and implementation. Identify all resources needed and work with leadership to meet project goals.

Manage the energy incentive program, identify incentives, make applications, and coordinate funding. Responsible for developing staff training, using independent judgment for problem-solving, proposing new strategies and initiatives, and writing, updating, and maintaining departmental policies and procedures. Perform energy audits and make recommendations on changes to improve energy consumption.

Provides analysis and tracking of campus facility energy efficiency programs. Tracks and validates utility usage metering data. Plan implementation of the UIC Energy and Carbon Plan.

Serve as Co-chair of the Energy Performance Contracting Committee. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical, industrial, electrical or energy engineering, or other field which requires quantitative analysis of energy data is required.

  • Certification as an Energy Manager or the ability to attain certification within one year of hire is required.

  • Work experience in the energy management field.

  • Knowledgeable of building operating systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy, cost-benefit analysis, energy auditing, principles of sustainability, and strategic energy management.

  • Familiarity with Green Revolving Investment Tracking System (GRITS), Energy Star and building automation systems.

  • Fluency with Microsoft Office, calculation of ROI, energy units, etc. Accomplished written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to provide detailed ECM reports that include implementation and ROI.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree

  • Two (2) years of experience working with utility incentive and rebate programs.

  • Fund management, GRI protocols for Greenhouse Gas Reporting.

  • Carry out commissioning of small automation and control projects.

  • Continually ensure that all energy savings measures are monitored and modified accordingly.
