The University of Virginia's Office for Sustainability is seeking both an Energy and Sustainability Engineering Associate and Engineer. Sustainability at the University is interdisciplinary, multi-faceted and highly collaborative, encompassing academics, research, and operations and a range of topics, including greenhouse gases, energy, water, waste, food, equity, and civic engagement. These positions give a unique opportunity to make a direct and measurable impact to help meet UVA's goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel-free by 2050.

Both roles are core members of the University of Virginia's Office for Sustainability team and will contribute to developing solutions to meet university-wide goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and overall environmental stewardship. Reporting to the Sustainability Engineering Manager, both positions focus on supporting innovative projects that incorporate best practices in sustainability and conservation in the use of energy, water, raw materials, and other resources through retro-commissioning, energy audits and technical analyses.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties. Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:

  • Collaborate with clients and provide excellent customer service in resolving customer service inquiries.

  • Conduct timely and comprehensive design reviews of sustainability issues for new construction or renovation projects, acting as an owner's representative for sustainability as needed.

  • Foster a safe work environment by complying with all OSHA, BOCA, federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills for managing multiple projects.

  • Technical expertise in HVAC systems and LEED certification.

  • Effective communication with diverse groups.

  • Familiarity with energy systems and building metrics.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and advanced spreadsheets.

  • Independent decision-making and problem-solving.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent teamwork skills.

  • Experience with energy modeling software preferred.

In addition to the above, the ASSOCIATE ENGINEER Responsibilities include:

  • Support innovative building efficiency projects, incorporating best practices in sustainability.

  • Manage project implementation to ensure timely completion with minimal disruptions.

  • Calculate payback periods for conservation and investment.

  • Document achievements and assist in communication material development.

  • Identify and implement sustainability opportunities through trend analysis.

  • Perform construction project reviews for compliance with UVA's Green Building Standards.

  • Assist with LEED certification and provide guidance to the community.

  • Develop engaging educational materials for occupants and maintenance personnel.

  • Train maintenance staff on sustainability initiatives.

  • Enhance preventive maintenance to support sustainability.

  • Foster sustainability efforts among faculty, staff, and students.

  • Inspect, evaluate, and solve building system deficiencies.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams for audits and improvements.

  • Navigate and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

In addition to the above the ENGINEER Responsibilities include:

  • Organize and lead energy audits and site visits with stakeholders including Architects and Engineers.

  • Discover the source of deficiencies in building systems, recommending retrofit scopes and develop project budgets.

  • Develop and manage building efficiency projects from inception to completion.

  • Ensure compliance and track progress for building energy efficiency projects.

  • Document progress and collaborate with stakeholders on initiatives and projects.

  • Coordinate with staff and stakeholders on building modifications to reduce energy usage.

  • Identify and instruct key team members to implement building efficiency recommendations.

  • Evaluate economic feasibility of developing innovative energy and controls technology.

  • Have familiarity with, or working knowledge of, building energy systems, utility metering metrics, building commissioning processes, measurement and verification processes.

Required Education and Experience for ASSOCIATE ENGINEER:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, sustainable design, architecture, landscape architecture, land use planning, environmental science, environment planning, or similar field.

  • Experience: With an engineering degree, a minimum of 2 years of professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls is essential. A degree in sustainable design or similar non-engineering field will require a minimum of 3 years' professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls.

Preferred Experience:

  • Four years of experience with HVAC and controls design or project management, commissioning, energy performance contracting.

  • Accreditation as EIT (Engineering in Training) or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer, ASHRAE Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Associate, LEED Accredited Professional, CEM (Certified Energy Manager).

Required Education and Experience for ENGINEER :

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related engineering field.

  • Experience: Seven years of related experience, which may include HVAC design or project management, HVAC controls engineering, commissioning, energy performance contracting, etc.

Preferred Experience:

  • Licensure: Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).

  • Registered as a CEM (Certified Energy Manager), ASHRAE Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Accreditation as a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Associate, LEED Accredited Professional

  • Experience with laboratory and/or healthcare HVAC design or commissioning.

Anticipated Compensation: These are full-time, 40 hour per week exempt positions with UVA benefits :

  • Associate Engineer: $70,000 - $85,000; based on education and experience.

  • Engineer: $90,000 - $105,000; based on education and experience.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers, however, regular visits to inspect existing buildings and construction sites will be required. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
