Job Description

General Summary

The Endoscopy Reprocessing Technician will coordinate the daily activities associated with the care and handling of flexible endoscopes and probes. This includes, but is not limited to: decontamination, inspection, testing, high level disinfection, repair tracking, documentation, storage and distribution. This team member will also serve as an expert advisor to leadership in regard to endoscope reprocessing by staying current with industry best practices, standards and regulations. Great customer service and critical thinking skills are required for interaction with customers and co-workers.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

• Reviews daily endoscopy lab and operating room schedules to ensure adequate coverage and resources to meet endoscope reprocessing needs. Works jointly with team members to ensure adequate inventory of disposable supplies are available for production activities.

• Reprocesses endoscopes according to manufacturer's Instructions For Use (IFU), SGNA, AORN, and CDC standards/recommendations.

• Assist with annual competency validation for the all staff who are assigned endoscope reprocessing tasks and supports staff education for scope reprocessing: ensures adherence to documentation requirements for compliance to regulatory standards.

• Assists with coordination and management of repairs and loaner equipment with Clinical Engineering; ensures repairs are documented and expedited, following up and communicating to unit leadership in reference to scope availability.

• Is competent on the operations of all production equipment and technology used for reprocessing medical devices. This includes AERs, high-level disinfection bins, and verification testing.

• Possible consideration for on the job training for GI Technician role pending unit needs, applicant qualifications and readiness.

• Keeps abreast of industry changes to include regulatory and best practices. Conducts a minimum of two annual in-services in reference to practice updates.

• Works cooperatively and in coordination with the GI Tech team and Nursing leads. Reports directly to Nurse Manager and Endoscopy Operations Supervisor.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent required.

• Three (3) years' experience in Endoscope reprocessing or Surgical technician preferred, will consider applicable experience in operating room setting on a one-for-one equivalent with some experience handling endoscopes.

• BLS Certified

• Certified as an Endoscope Reprocessor preferred OR ability to obtain certification within twelve months from date of hire or transfer into the position.

• Proficient in verification testing and AER use and management preferred.

• Knowledge of medical terminology, supplies and a basic knowledge of computers and computer office software programs preferred.
