Job Summary

The EMT Instructor provides primary instruction for prehospital-related and other similar courses, including the medical school's EMT Program. Utilizes consultation, evaluation, facilitation, curriculum development, and instructional skill to develop educational support strategies for all courses of instruction. The instructor serves as a resource to students, preceptors, mentors, and others while working under the direct supervision of the Manager, EMT Education Program. They will attend all planning and development meetings and will assist the Director to ensure all adjunct faculty are qualified and performing as expected. The EMT Instructor will also assist in training Standardized Patients to portray clinical scenarios and assess students in communication, history taking and physical examination skills and clinical procedural skills as required.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree

  • Clinical or scientific field

Minimum Experience
2 years

  • Direct Prehospital education experience

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

JOB RELATED CERTIFICATION

  • COTR

Specific Acceptable Credentials (if applicable)

Current EMT - Paramedic License (South Carolina and National)

South Carolina EMT Instructor License (Paramedic Instructor license preferred) - current licensure or must be obtained within 6 months to 1 year of hire date

ACLS, BCLS, PALS, PHTLS instructor certification - current licensure or must be obtained within 3 months of hire

In lieu of the Above Minimum Requirements

Associates degree and 4 years of related experience as well as a high school diploma; OR High School Diploma and 10 years EMS related experience are accepted as an equivalency to the above mentioned experience.

Other Required Experience

Valid South Carolina Driver's License

  • Required

Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysicology

  • Required

Knowledge of local, regional, state and national rules governing all levels of EMT performance

  • Required

Courses include but are not limited to Emergency Medical Technician, Critical Care Paramedic, and NAEMT Courses.Provide EMT Laboratory oversight for student groups during designated sessions in the medical school's EMT course. Instruct medical students in all psychomotor skills required for course completion using preapproved methods and procedures. Develop and conduct patient care scenarios that serve to demonstrate the cognitive principles and psychomotor skills taught. Assist with practical components of module examinations. Arrive prior to any academic session and prepare equipment and supplies required for that session. Attend any mandatory training sessions. Provide feedback to the Program Director regarding deficiencies, problems, or accomplishments. Monitor student effectiveness and progress and provide student evaluations to the Director using approved methods of reporting which may include written or verbal reports. Promote active student learning and participation. Maintain a professional appearance and learning atmosphere that exemplifies quality interprofessional interactions. Provide a safe environment for students.
