What is the EMSAR program?

EMSAR is an acronym for Hamilton Emergency Medical Service Active Reserve program. The EMSAR program is a unique volunteer unit of Hamilton EMS (HEMS). This non-paid organization was established in August 2015 and the first of its kind in the region.

The EMSAR unit of HEMS is designed to provide the opportunity for qualified individuals to remain current and competent in emergency care by volunteering time with the advanced life support units of Hamilton EMS. The program is designed to help benefit those certified and/or licensed pre-hospital care providers who are not currently employed by an emergency medical service or those providers that simply do not gain enough direct patient care while on their normal job. EMSAR provides the individual with the opportunity to document legitimate experience in emergency care by working along side HEMS crews during normal, everyday operations.

EMSAR personnel also form an organized community-based network of trained Hamilton EMS emergency care professionals that provide essential care in the event of disaster operations. EMSAR also enhances HEMS coverage at largely populated events such as high school football games, rodeos, community celebrations, and concerts.

Who is a candidate for EMSAR?

Candidates for the EMSAR unit represent a broad segment of the community. Members vary in age, education, and employment. EMSAR candidates need not to be employed in emergency services or even in the health care field but possess a valid Georgia emergency care provider certification or license. The EMSAR program is also open to any and all qualified members of the fire departments jointly participating in the Comprehensive Patient Care Program with Hamilton EMS. EMSAR's goal is simple - to provide extended and enhanced clinical experience to our emergency service community beyond the first responder scope of patient care while working with HEMS EMT-Is, AEMTs and paramedics.

The EMSAR program also provides a competitive advantage for the volunteer by providing legitimate experience in the EMS profession in order to better qualify the individual for future consideration for employment in emergency services,

Additionally, the program benefits both HEMS and the EMSAR volunteer by pre-qualifying for entry into the ranks of the paid HEMS staff. Since the EMSAR volunteer is generally given priority over other external applicants provided the EMSAR volunteer has remained in good standing. If the EMSAR volunteer has performed satisfactory (based on routine evaluations) they would be eligible for a smooth transition into a paid position with HEMS as opportunities arise. However, positions are not guaranteed for an EMSAR volunteer, but the credible opportunity exists to network and build strong relationships within the emergency medical community. All members are required to be certified/licensed by the State of Georgia as:

  • First Responder

  • Emergency Medical Technician

  • Basic
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
