The Department of Emergency Services is looking for a qualified applicant to fill the position of EMS Training Captain. This position is located in Olathe, Kansas, and provides excellent benefits, including health insurance, retirement savings programs, wellness discounts, incentives, and many other great benefits such as paid leave time.

The EMS Training Captain is responsible for creating, developing, and delivering differentiated instruction of pre-hospital medical care training programs to emergency responders within the Johnson County EMS System to assure mastery of patient care practices.

Job Description

Essential Duties:

  • Independently creates, develops, delivers, monitors and revises training curricula in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains through both lecture and hands on training to the Medical Director's office, providers, agencies, co-responders and fire departments in the Johnson County EMS System; identifies and addresses training needs; sets learning objectives and tasks; obtains and creates course materials, handouts and presentations according to course objectives.

  • Presents, and trains varied skill courses, workshops and development programs; guides and leads organizational trainers and provides feedback in areas of improvement; serves in a train-the-trainer role; leads and audits the assessments of employee progress to evaluate the effectiveness of training; advances and supports organizational development initiatives; coordinates and organizes to include but not limited to training rooms or facilities are prepared, and supplies are available; ensures equipment is in proper working condition; reserves rooms and facilities; books caterers.

  • Creates, revises and audits content within e-learning platforms; acts as site administrator; serves as liaison with information technology (IT) for system set up, enhancements and troubleshooting.

  • Oversees department/agency training schedule; assists in training and coaching managers, supervisors, and others involved in employee development; develops and maintains organizational communications for promotion of training and development events and resources; oversees compliance of training requirements and plans; conducts follow up studies of all completed training to evaluate and measure results; tracks attendance; prepares and distributes evaluation surveys; monitors supply inventory and orders supplies; creates and disseminates reports.

  • Maintains all medical education documentation for Johnson County Med-Act providers in accordance with KSBEMS and National Registry guidelines; collaborates with outside educational institutions to facilitate paramedic internships; manages, maintains and updates department equipment and supplies and maintains an active awareness of division's budget and expenditures.

  • Reports on progress of employees under guidance during training periods; assists in development and monitoring spending against the department/agency training budget; collaborates in strategic training plan development and implementation; leads or serves on training related committees.

  • Completes Captain-Operations duties as regularly scheduled.

  • This position is OSHA category 1.

This position is also responsible for the supervision and leadership of employees, which includes making employment-related decisions and/or recommendations, and formally evaluating performance.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services, Health Occupations or relevant degree of study. Certification NAEMSE Level 1 and Level 2 or equivalent or obtained within one year.

Four (4) years in pre-hospital care as a paramedic within an emergency medical or related services provider. Two (2) years of experience in an educational or instructor type role.

Current Paramedic certification by the state of Kansas or eligible for certification bi-annually at the employee's expense.

Working twenty-four (24) hour shifts and up to thirty-six (36) hours including weekends and holidays and on-call/standby work is required.

Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and successful completion of the post-offer drug testing are required.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Certified as a Kansas EMS Instructor Coordinator

Experience may be substituted for education. Education may be substituted for experience.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.
