The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor is responsible for providing lab content education to VCU Center for Trauma and Critical Care (CTCCE) students. This includes, but not limited to, EMT, AEMT, and paramedic, students, as well as continuing educational programs offered by CTCCE.

EMS Instructors must be familiar with program goals, able to demonstrate the ability to follow an organized plan of instruction and have appropriate credentials for the learning areas they teach in the laboratory setting or educational program discipline. Provide frequent assessments of the students' progress in achieving overall program requirements. Performs duties assigned under the direction and delegation the lead instructor as they pertain to the laboratory environment. Assist in setting up training equipment, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and storing/organizing equipment after use.

Educational Delivery Content:

Provides instruction including laboratory and simulation sessions.

Provides for the care of supplies and equipment.

Ensures equipment is maintained in optimal condition for instruction.

Evaluates student competence based on program objectives.

Maintains accurate roster records.

Attends regularly scheduled faculty meetings.

Assesses student progress in achieving theory (cognitive content), performance (psychomotor competencies), and professional behavior (affective) requirements of the program.

Demonstrates evidence-based teaching.

Maintains current standards of practice in all classes taught.

Responsible to follow the educational objectives and schedule that meets the requirements set forth by the CTCCE faculty.

Maintains a student to instructor ratio of no more than 6 students per instructor for skills training and testing.

Student:

Approaches teaching and learning from a coaching-mentoring paradigm where non-punitive feedback is encouraged.

Complies with all academic and regulatory policies including FERPA confidentiality of personal information provided by the students.

Complies with all National Registry and State Office of EMS guidelines.

Complies with national organization policies and standards such as the American Heart Association and National Association of EMT's when applicable.

Program:

Maintains and upholds the policies and procedures of the program.

Represents CTCCE in a positive manner to internal and external constituents.

Other duties as assigned.

Practice:

Maintains professional qualifications through participation in continuing education programs and academic courses.

Contributes toward professional growth by attending workshops, conferences, faculty meetings, academic courses and professional memberships

Participates in special projects as required.

Required Qualifications

Virginia certified EMT or higher for a minimum of 3 years

Active EMS experience within the past 3 years.

No OEMS enforcement actions within the past 5 years

Preferred Qualifications

Paramedic certification

National Registry certification

Experience instructing/assisting in EMS skill instruction.

Virginia certified EMS Education Coordinator (unrestricted)

AHA BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS instructor

NAEMT instructor in any discipline

Associates Degree
