Employee & Labor Relations Intern

Location: St. Barnabas HospitalDepartment: Human ResourcesHours: Intern

Qualifications

The Employee & Labor Relations intern will provide support to the Employee and Labor Relations Generalist and the Assistant Director of Labor Relations. This role will assist with the day to day employee and labor relations functions, the exit process, policy development, and other special projects. This intern will also have the opportunity to work in other HR departments as needed.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and revising employment policies

  • Researching and drafting memorandas on labor and employment issues

  • Coordination of meetings (i.e. Employee Investigations, Grievances/ Settlements)

  • Communicating guidance on employee relations issues to business and HR leaders throughout the organization

  • Participating in Joint Commission/Compliance and Immigration projects

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 3rd year students actively working toward their Bachelor Degree required. Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, PreLaw, Psychology, or Health Care Administration preferred.

  • Law students who have completed their first year of JD program preferred.

  • Authorization to work in the United States of America

  • Interest in Labor and Employment Law and/or Human Resources

  • Taken or planning to take a labor law or employment law class

  • Strong, research, written, and oral communication skills

  • Willingness to learn and work in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports directly to the SVP Human Resources. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The Manager of Labor and Employee Relations plays a central role in managing a range of activities related to employee/labor relations in a complex and unionized organization. Strategizes, directs and coordinates employee relations programs and functions in accordance with needs assessments as well as sound administrative practices consistent with the organization's mission, values, and goals. Ensures the organization establishes and adheres to HR policies, procedures and practices that promote fairness and consistency, comply with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and all relevant employment laws, and regulations, and promote the organization culture. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Assist and advise managers on labor matters and specific performance issues * Assist managers in interpreting the collective bargaining agreement ensuring agreement is carried out as expected * Administer and manage a fair and consistent employee performance management process * Administer and manage all disciplinary systems and processes * Administer union grievance and arbitration procedures and represent management in grievance meetings and arbitration hearings * Ensure compliance with federal, state, and City employment and discrimination laws and labor related regulations * Conduct trainingto ensure managers comply with and have knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures * Investigate and respond to employee concerns including all formal and informal complaints * Participate in collective bargaining negotiations * Respond to all unemployment claims and participate in Department of Labor hearings * Develop and manage employee recognition programs * Act as a key member of the Retention and Recruitment Committee * Coordinate agency-wide events, including holiday parties and employee recognition events * Manage any special projects and programs as assigned * Prepare any needed documents, reports and presentations * Other related duties as assigned REQUIREMENTS : The selected candidate will be a broad-based and strategic thinker who manages a staff and keeps close to all details in the employee life cycle. Key qualifications include: * Bachelor's degree required.
