What you can expect to do:

  • Triage
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize medical emergencies and illnesses
  • Assessing patients
  • Recording vitals and assisting doctors with diagnostics
  • Completing all treatments as instructed by the doctor
  • Basic husbandry and nursing care
  • Monitoring all changes in patients and giving them all the compassionate care they deserve
  • Taking blood
  • Placing catheters
  • Assisting in and facilitating radiography capture
  • Preparing samples for outside reference labs
  • Running in-house lab work
  • Preparing medications
  • Administering medications
  • Any other field related tasks


What we will need from you:

  • Be available Nights weekends and Holidays
  • Be able to follow verbal written and electronic instructions
  • Have a minimum of 2 years veterinary technician experience
  • Be able to work well in a fast-paced environment with all personality types
  • Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs

This role will promote learning and growth as an emergency veterinary assistant and encourage individuals to obtain further education and credentialing to pursue a lifelong career as a veterinary nurse. Veterinary assistants are a vital member of the nursing care team along with veterinary nurses and carry out patient treatment plans in coordination with the veterinary team. </p><p><strong>WHO WE NEED</strong></p><p>You are passionate and motivated. You display excellent communication skills to your peers, customers, and team. <br></p><p><strong>WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO</strong></p><ul> <li>Treat each patient and customer with the highest level of compassion &amp; care.</li> <li>Perform basic to intermediate nursing care tasks, patient monitoring, and treatments.</li> <li>Use understanding of common diseases and conditions, physical assessment, and monitoring parameters to accurately triage incoming patients.</li> <li>Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications and understand potential adverse effects of medications.</li> <li>Set-up, monitor, and administer intravenous fluid therapy including constant rate infusions and blood transfusion therapy. </li> <li>Contribute as a team member to incoming outpatient care and ongoing inpatient care.</li> <li>Participate in giving and receiving patient rounds to ensure continuity of care. </li> <li>Be trained to properly perform all aspects of CPR as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer.</li> <li>Collect samples and perform diagnostic tests including in-house &amp; point-of-care tests and diagnostic imaging.</li> <li>Assist in setting-up, performing, monitoring sedation and surgical anesthesia with LVT or DVM supervision. </li> <li>Perform nursing care tasks such as placing and maintaining urinary catheters and nasal oxygen tubes.</li> <li>Perform nursing care tasks such as maintaining nasoenteral, chest, and abdominal tubes.</li> <li>Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot oxygen cages and other oxygen administration techniques.</li> <li>Work alongside veterinary nurses as a vital member of the nursing care team.</li> </ul><ul><li>Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles in addition to direct nursing care such as veterinary technician credentialing, trainer role, community outreach, and leadership. </li></ul> <p>Veterinary assistants can additionally perform (where allowed by law):</p><ul> <li>Administer, monitor, and maintain patients under general anesthesia with or without mechanical ventilation for patients with varied levels of risk. </li> <li>Perform advanced vascular access techniques including jugular catheter placement, sampling line placement, central line placement, intraosseous catheterization, and arterial catheterization.</li> <li>Perform advanced diagnostic techniques including ultrasonography and paracentesis, </li> <li>Participate in formulating treatment, anesthetic, and nursing care plans.</li> <li>Conduct treatments using clinical decision-making skills according to protocolized plans. </li> <li>Aid in managing patient care workload to ensure the patients are receiving uncompromised care. </li> <li>Coach and guide veterinary assistants and veterinary nurses to perform clinical tasks to maintain standards of care and encourage growth. </li> <li>Collaborate and share knowledge with teammates to ensure optimal patient care.</li> <li>Obtain additional training along guided growth pathways offering roles in addition to direct nursing care such as a trainer role, coordination of care, community outreach, and leadership. </li> </ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><p><strong>WHAT YOU NEED</strong></p><ul> <li>High school diploma or equivalent</li> <li>Basic computer skills to use practice management, electronic medical record, and collaboration software.</li> <li>&gt;1 year of experience in a veterinary assistant role or completion of the VEG clinical training program. Experience in emergency or specialty medicine preferred.</li> <li>Ability to read, speak and hear sufficiently to understand, complete tasks instructed in all forms of communication, written, verbal, or other.</li> <li>Provide information in person &amp; over the phone communicating clearly, appropriately &amp; professionally.</li> <li>Properly communicates information to all personnel including management, medical staff &amp; customers.</li> <li>Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment necessary daily such as syringes, electric clippers, computers, surgery instruments, monitors, diagnostic equipment, etc.</li> <li>Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance.</li> </ul><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><h3>Emergency is all we do, so we do it best!
