WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

You will be providing support for field enforcement units of the Department of Public Safety at the Alaska State Troopers North Operations Center. You will be answering emergency and non-emergency phone calls and dispatching units to calls for service via the radio.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

The Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 position is based in Fairbanks and located at 1979 Peger Road in a secure facility. The work environment is fast-paced - we answer more than 135,000 calls per year.

You will be part of a team of dispatchers who truly are the heart of the telecommunications services provided by the Department of Public Safety.

Two years of work experience. This experience must include six months of experience that entails clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

AND

The ability to type at a net speed of 30 words per minute with no more than three errors per minute.

OR

Any combination of education from an accredited college (three semester hours or four quarter hours equal one month of experience), vocational education (150 hours equal one month of experience), and/or work experience may substitute for up to 18 months of non-specific work experience.

Special Note:

Specific positions in this job class may require incumbents to be Emergency Medical Certified, Emergency Police Certified, or Emergency Fire Dispatch Certified.

Shift work may be required.

A background investigation will be required upon initial employment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

You must create an account with the National Testing Network (NTN) for the Emergency Communications Exam. Applicants who are successful through the interview phase will be provided an invitation and payment voucher to complete the Emergency Communications Exam.

Specific positions in this job class may require incumbents to be Emergency Medical, Police, or Fire Dispatch certified.

Shift work may be required.

This position requires use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN), which means a background investigation including fingerprinting will be conducted per 13 AAC 68.215.

This position requires individuals to multitask and maintain emotional control and composure to work effectively during emergencies, crisis situations, and/or extremely stressful conditions.

The Alaska State Troopers North Operations Center offers full testing services for the position of Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 through the National Testing Network (NTN). To register with NTN and schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select 'Choose/Find Jobs', then select Emergency Communications / Alaska and sign up for Alaska State Troopers Emergency Services Dispatcher 1. When you visit the www.nationaltestingnetwork.com website complete the NTN registration process and schedule your test.

Test results must demonstrate typing ability of 30 wpm or greater. Test results will be accessible to the hiring manager upon completion of the test. Applicants who are successful through the interview phase will be provided an invitation and payment voucher to complete the Emergency Communications Exam.

APSIN

Please be aware - this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
