Emergency Medical Technician (Temporary)

The City of Coronado is seeking highly motivated and community-oriented individuals who desire a position in the fire service serving the City of Coronado and will uphold the department's mission statement. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that may occur within the immediate future.

The Position

Under supervision, responds to emergency medical calls and provides basic life support services to ill or injured persons in accordance with the policies established by the Department of Emergency Medical Services of San Diego County; operates and maintains ambulances, support vehicles, equipment, stations, and communication systems; attends classes and training; performs other duties as required.

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

  • Responds to emergency medical services (EMS) calls; all types of accidents and responds to non-emergency calls.

  • Performs EMS skills as defined in the EMT scope of practice; provides a basic life support assessment of medical problems and injuries; renders emergency medical care and treatment to ill or injured persons in accordance with Department and San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols.

  • Support and assist other Fire personnel as directed on medical calls.

  • Operates ambulances safely, transports patients in accordance with Department policies and in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols.

  • Prepares a variety of written reports and records such as controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports; maintains medical information in a confidential manner.

  • Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency bandaging and splinting, and other medical procedures as directed by the Base Station Hospital.

  • Assists in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies.

  • Participates in drills and other Department training activities.

  • Studies and keeps up to date on City geography, Department rules, regulations, procedures and other training and job-related materials.

  • Regularly operates the following: ambulance/rescue vehicle and related emergency medical equipment, radio/telephone equipment, personal protective equipment.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Six months of full-time field experience as an Emergency Medical Technician is highly desirable, but not required.

Education/Training:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have an education equivalent to completion of high school.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record. Ambulance driver's endorsement NOT required.

  • Possession of a valid certification as an EMT with the State of California is required at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

  • Possession of a valid EMT accreditation with the County of San Diego EMS Office is required at time of appointment and must be maintained as a condition of employment.

  • Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Candidate Selection Process:

Application Review:

A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division. Applications will be received on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. This recruitment will be open until filled. The first application review deadline will be May 10th.

Examination Process:

Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. Applicants considered most qualified will be contacted and invited to participate in an examination process consisting of an oral interview and skill assessment.

Candidate Selection:

The selected candidate will be issued a conditional offer, subject to the successful completion of background check and medical examination.

Additional Information:

All candidates who successfully obtain a passing score in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six (6) months.
