The San Marcos Fire Department currently has open part time Emergency Medical Technician positions available. Under direct supervision, responds to emergency medical calls, fire alarms, and other emergencies, and provides basic life support services to ill or injured persons in accordance with established policies.

All EMT positions are on a regular 24-Hour shift schedule (40 regular hours plus additional hours worked at OT). Part Time employees are permitted to work up to 999 hours per fiscal year (FY) and no more than an average of 20 hours per week, as budget allows.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Operates ambulances safely; transports patients in accordance with Department Policies and in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols.

  • Responds to emergency medical services (EMS) calls; responds to alarms involving fire, all types of accidents, hazardous materials, and life saving and rescue work; responds to non-emergency calls such as bed assists and lockouts.

  • Performs EMS skills as defined in the EMT scope of practice: provides a BLS assessment of medical problems and injuries; provides emergency medical care and treatment to ill or injured persons in accordance with Department Policies and San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols.

  • Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency bandaging and splinting, and other medical procedures as directed by the Base Station Hospital.

  • Prepares a variety of written reports and records; maintains medical information in a confidential manner.

  • Participates and supports the quality assurance/quality improvement program.

  • Cleans and maintains fire stations and grounds; washes, polishes and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

  • Inspects and maintains fire hydrants.

  • Participates in drills and other department training activities.

  • Studies and keeps up-to-date on City geography, department rules, regulations, procedures and other training and job related material.

  • Makes pre-fire plan and special area response maps.

  • Presents programs and participates in departmental public relations program; demonstrates proper procedures and techniques to other employees as assigned.

  • Regularly operates the following: paramedic ambulance/rescue vehicle and related emergency medical equipment, radio/telephone equipment, personal protective equipment.

  • Occasionally operates the following: rescue and fire suppression miscellaneous tools.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

EMT Scope of Practice; EMS procedures and equipment; California vehicular laws; a basic understanding of fire based EMS delivery system; geography and street layout of the City of San Marcos and surrounding area; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; principles and practices of customer service.

Ability to:

Perform competently under extreme pressure and in stressful situations; make accurate observations and rapid judgments; understand a variety of procedural instructions, both written and oral, and convert to proper actions; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public; work cooperatively with others and contribute to a successful team effort; maintain physical endurance and agility; adjust to all weather conditions for prolonged periods of time; demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.

Emergency Medical Technician Licensure Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age and have an education equivalent to completion of high school. Six months E.M.T. experience preferred but not required. Completion of State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy (348 hour or equivalent) preferred but not required.

License or Certificate:

The following licenses and certificates MUST be attached to the application and are required to be maintained throughout employment and are not subject to waiver.

1.Valid California Class C Driver License, Ambulance driver endorsement NOT required

2.Candidates must submit a current DMV Driving Report (Available online at the DMV website)

3.Valid EMT-I certification as defined by the State of California, Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA)

4.Must be accredited as an EMT-I in San Diego County by time of appointment. If you currently have a SD County EMT Accreditation, please submit.

5.Valid CPR Certificate/Card (minimum of healthcare provider)

Special Requirements:

Any EMT hired after July 1, 1992, shall be required to remain a nonsmoker throughout employment with the San Marcos Fire Department. The EMT shall have no Federal or State felony convictions.

Residency Requirements:

Must live within the Department residency boundary within one year of appointment. Must reside in the local counties of San Diego, Riverside, Orange, and Los Angeles.
