Position Summary

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) are skilled in patient assessment, airway management, CPR, automatic external defibrillation, oxygen delivery, dressings and hemorrhage control, splinting, spinal immobilization, childbirth, lifting and moving patients, and extrication. Our EMTs have the opportunity to use their skills in both a routine transport and emergent setting.


High School Diploma/GED

Successful completion of EMT training course

Currently licensed or licensable in Maine as an EMT

Current Health Care Provider CPR certification

Active, unrestricted, Maine driver's license

Insurable by auto insurance carrier

AVOC within 6 months of hire

Current BTLS, PHTLS, or other approved trauma training

Experience/Skill Requirements

Pre-hospital EMS experience preferred.

Must be familiar with computer use

Must have the ability to remain calm in dynamic situations: ability to be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights; ability to perform efficiently throughout the entire work shift without interruption.

Must have the ability to efficiently interview patients, family, and bystanders.

Must have the ability to interpret written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions.

Must have the ability to read English language, manuals, road maps, accurate discern street signs and address numbers; ability to calculate weight and volume ratios.

Must have the ability to communicate in English with co-workers, patients, health professionals, and others.

Must demonstrate competency in: assessing patient, handling emergencies utilizing Basic Life Support equipment and procedures; have the ability to perform CPR, control of hemorrhage, non-invasive shock treatment, fracture and spinal stabilization, manage environmental emergencies, emergency childbirth, operation of the semi-automatic defibrillator, delivery of oxygen.

Must be able to perform advanced airway control; IV/IO therapy; cardiac monitoring; defibrillation; and other practices as approved by Maine EMS.

The EMT is also responsible in assisting other departments upon request in emergency situations, promoting training and education to the public, conducting daily inspection of equipment and quarters and assisting with departmental operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Essential duties of EMS position follow the National Scope of Practice Documents Published by the National Registry of EMTS (NREMT) which can be found at These include: * Performing emergency and routine patient care in the pre-hospital setting and interfaculty transport setting in a calm and safe manner. * Driving safety in response to 911 calls, as well as on interfacility transfer * Performing public and community education * Maintaining equipment and supplies, and assisting with the maintenance of the living quarters. * Assisting in the hospital setting as delegated and needed consistent with the collective bargaining agreement * Working collaboratively with community partners, other public health agencies, and hospital personnel. * Willingness and desire to be a life-long learner, and continuously increase knowledge through formal education. * Maintain physical wellness and agility to perform the essential duties of the position. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS (at time of hire): * Maine EMS license eligible at time of hire. (Must be licensed prior to completion of orientation) AFTER HIRE, AND TO BE MAINTAINED TEHRAFTER: * Valid Maine motor vehicle driver's license. * AVOC Training or equivalent (EVOC, etc. for all new hires as of 1/1/2012) – Any new hire without AVOC certification will be required to obtain this certification within 6 months of employment or at the next available course, whichever date is earlier. * Current CPR Certification.
