MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician
18 years of age or older
A valid State of Illinois Driver's License
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience as an EMT or other healthcare professional
Previous experience providing services to persons experiencing a mental health or substance related crisis
Experience working in a high-stress environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Empathetic and compassionate patient-centered approach to interactions
Effectiveness, versatility and action-oriented mindset
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
NOTE: Credentialing under Region 11, Chicago EMS Systems including EMS System Entry and all required EMS Continuing Education updates for maintenance once hired
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a writing exercise as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General office environment
Public safety work environment
Ability to work flexible on-call hours may be required; hours are subject to change based on program needs
Must be comfortable responding to calls in communities across the city
EQUIPMENT
Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, printer, photocopier, fax machine, calculator)
Computers and peripheral equipment (e.g., computer, modems)
Two-way radios
Emergency Medical Service equipment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to use EMT medical equipment and supplies including automated extended defibrillator equipment
Must be comfortable bending, lifting, and kneeling over the course of the shift
Ability to operate automotive vehicles and associated equipment
KNOWLEDGE
Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines
Departmental orders and other written policies and procedures (e.g. General Orders and addenda, Special Directives, Memoranda, SOPs, and Labor agreements of the Chicago Department of Public Health)
Department response levels, chain of command, and incident command procedures at emergency incidents
EMT scope of practice including Region 11 EMS Protocols, Policies, and Procedures
Some knowledge of:
Management and supervisory methods, practices, and procedures
Geographical locations in the City
Public safety principles and practices
Knowledge of applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
