About Our Program
The Prince William County Office of Emergency Management (PWC EM) coordinates the county's all-hazards emergency management program which includes mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all natural, technological, and human caused disasters. PWC EM is responsible for the development and implementation of county-wide programs and projects that includes all phases of emergency management in the areas of planning, training, exercise, fiscal and operational guidance while taking a whole community approach. PWC EM seeks to promote a safer, less vulnerable, and more resilient community with the capacity to endure all threats and hazards.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duty of the emergency management intern will be to provide administrative and technical assistance on assigned emergency management projects. These projects may include the following:
Contribute to innovative projects planned during the summer term to, which may include:
County Emergency Operations Plan updates
Special event planning in support of LPGA Solheim Cup (Sept 2024)
Implementation of new training and exercise program for PWC EM Partners
Support the development of Mission Ready Packages in support of our emergency management logistics program
Preparing for and conducting community outreach events or activities
Participating in training and exercise design, development, and execution
Provide technical and administrative assistance on emergency management projects
Conduct research and preliminary analysis to support ongoing planning efforts
Work assignments will be adjusted based on the interests and career aspirations of the selected intern to provide the most beneficial experience possible.
Internship Benefits
The emergency management internship with PWC EM provides an opportunity for students or recent graduates to explore career options, apply academic knowledge and skills to the workplace, gain career skills and experience, and network with emergency management professionals throughout the National Capital Region. While working in PWC EM, interns will:
Gain real world experience within the field of emergency management.
Attend local and regional emergency management meetings while networking with other state and federal emergency management and homeland security professionals.
Learn how the Office of Emergency Management works with local, state, and federal agencies, non-government agencies, and community organizations to prepare Prince William County for emergencies and disasters.
Attend regional emergency management activities and network with other state and federal emergency management and homeland security professionals.
Work toward and/or complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training and the Professional Development Series through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Complete a capstone research project relating to an issue of interest and importance to emergency management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Ability to work independently or as part of a group and be a self-starter.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Be detail-oriented while possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.
An independent work style and analytical research skills.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint are preferred.
Background in emergency management, homeland security, public safety, public administration, or related fields.
Education Requirements
PWC EM is ideally looking for an individual who is:
An undergraduate (juniors or seniors) orgraduate student, preference for students who will receive credit for the internship.
In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at a U.S. college or university
PWC will also consider recent graduateswith a background in emergency management, homeland security, public safety, public administration, or related fields.
Internship Details
Pay:$16/per hour
Academic Credit: Contact your academic advisor for requirements and acquire course credit for your internship.
Duration:8 -10 weeks, June through August; exact timing to be agreed up by selected intern and PWC EM
Time Commitment:20-32 hours per week, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (The program is flexible and will accommodate the successful candidate with prior approval.)
Interns may be asked to work outside of normal business hours during an Emergency Operations Center activation, community outreach event, or as approved by the Emergency Management Coordinator or designee.
