The University of Virginia is seeking two Emergency Management Coordinators. The positions of Emergency Management Coordinator

  • Planning and Emergency Management Coordinator

  • Training and Outreach within the Office of Emergency Management. UVA Emergency Management develops and communicates the University's key emergency policies, strategies, plans and procedures across Grounds and with our separate campuses. We help the institution Mitigate, Plan, Respond, and Recover from emergencies, large and small. The emergency management coordinators report to the Associate Director of Emergency Management and are responsible for assisting with preparedness, response, and recovery of planned and unplanned events that impact the University of Virginia and the safety of our faculty, staff, students, and other members of the University community.

The Emergency Management Coordinator

  • Planning is responsible for developing and revising plans and procedures for the Critical Incident Management Team, departments, and schools across the University, emergency procedures for employees and students, managing the University's Building Emergency Action Plan program, and developing incident action plans and event action plans for planned and no-notice events.

The Emergency Management Coordinator

  • Training and Outreach is responsible for conducting student, faculty and staff outreach and education, onboarding and training members of the University's Critical Incident Management Team, Severe Weather Assessment Team, Special Event Command Post Team, and other incident management teams, developing and delivering training programs and annual refreshers for the various incident management teams, managing the University's annual emergency preparedness training program for employees, and conducting outreach and delivering presentations either alone or in collaboration with other departments to students, staff and faculty.

It is important to recognize that these positions are required to staff after hours events as needed and will be working in an office that requires 24/7 attention. The selected individuals will be required to work evenings and weekends on an occasional basis to help meet the needs of the University. Both positions require an innovative and collaborative individual who is used to working on multiple projects, balancing competing demands, and sticking to deadlines, someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high workload environment.

Responsibilities of the Position Include:

  • Collaborate with students, departments and schools within the University to prepare for planned and unplanned threats

  • Be proficient with the UVA Alerts and Veoci software systems

  • Participate in weeklong rotations as the weather duty officer and develop enterprise-level weather briefings

  • Participate in evening, night and weekend work as required, such as during severe weather and when staffing a command post or the emergency operations center

  • Assist with developing and staffing an ICS structured University Command Post and Emergency Operations Center capable of operating 24/7 under the direction of an Incident Commander and staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in emergency management or a related discipline and at least one year of fulltime emergency management experience

  • Possess or obtain Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification within the first twelve months of employment

  • Obtain IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800 certificates within the first 60 days of employment.

  • Commence attendance with the National Emergency Management Basic Academy within the first twelve months of employment.

  • Demonstrated experience in either developing and revising emergency operations plans, emergency operations procedures, and incident or event action plans, or in developing and delivering training and outreach programs, along with annual refreshers.

  • Ability to adjust to a changing environment, manage competing and shifting priorities and deadlines with a strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in emergency management or a related discipline

  • Three or more years of fulltime emergency management experience

  • Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) or Certified Emergency Management (CEM) certification

  • Completion of IS-2200 and G0191

  • Experience in Higher Education emergency management

  • Experience with Veoci software

Anticipated Hiring Range: $77,000 to $79,000

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.
