JOB SUMMARY: Performs patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. He/she should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the Emergency Department.

PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS

Essential Function

1 Provides direct personal care, general nursing care and routine treatment for a group of patients.

a Demonstrates awareness of patient's comfort and safety when performing any personal care activities.

b Demonstrates competence in performing simple treatment procedures such as taking vital signs, application of heat or cold to patient injuries and basic skin care.

c Demonstrates awareness of patient safety, comfort and privacy when performing any treatment.

d Records/reports to RN on duty any treatment results, observations, patient complaints, variations from normal and other pertinent information regarding the condition of patients.

e Demonstrates ability to perform general nursing care for patients following established procedures i.e., positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying and utilizing special equipment assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode.

f Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight, intake/output and other measurements an applicable in an accurate and precise manner.

g Records pertinent care activity information on Emergency Room Record.

h Uses Universal Precautions for blood and bodily fluids on all emergency department patients.

i Demonstrates competence in prescribed hand washing and aseptic technique.

j Answers emergency call bell. Personally assists patient with requests or reports request to appropriate personnel.

k Demonstrates a cooperative and positive attitude when assisting patients.

l Assists with the disposition of patient's clothing and personal property, i.e. Prosthetic devices, glasses, etc.; secures items in accordance with established department policy.

m Records all required information on appropriate form and provides for safe care of patient's valuables.

2 Assists licensed staff in complicated treatment procedures.

a Assists licensed staff and medical staff in performing complicated treatment procedures as requested that are within scope of responsibility.

b Demonstrates ability to follow directions and to perform specific duties under the supervision of licensed staff.

c May participate in supportive activities in a code procedure as requested.

3 Assists in preparation of Emergency Department unit, rooms and gurneys.

a Prepares ED unit to receive patients using established department procedure.

b Checks emergency rooms to ensure that all supplies and equipment required for patient care are present.

4 Assists in and may accompany patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedure.

a Assists patients in the admission, transfer and discharge procedure as assigned and following established department procedure.

b Uses proper techniques of body mechanics to protect patient and self.

c Provides for patient's safety by using appropriate preventative safety measures, i.e. side rails, restraints, patient education.

d Performs and documents patient admission and discharge data correctly and accurately as assigned.

Essential Function

5 Performs other duties as requested by ED nurse.

a Demonstrates a reliable and dependable ability to follow through with assigned responsibilities in the collecting, labeling, and transporting of specimens to the proper area.

b Uses supplies and equipment prudently. Follows procedure to order and/or charge for supplies and equipment.

6 Performs various clerical functions for the ER unit.

a Treats people in a courteous, professional manner.

b Records and delivers messages accurately and in a timely manner.

c Remains calm, reassuring and able to provide directions during high stress periods.

d Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies and equipment on assigned nursing units.

e Assists in maintaining bulletin boards, which are neat and timely.

f Files information, i.e., memos, lab results, etc. for future reference.

g Initiates, assembles and maintains charts for patients on ED unit.

h Assists in, transcribing physician orders, completes all necessary forms, requisitions, and communications necessary to implement orders. Checks for accuracy before implementing.

i Notifies licensed staff of any unusual test results immediately.

j Ensures that patient required signatures are obtained. Obtains "Conditions of Admission" on after hour admits and ED Consent for Treatment. May arrange for transportation as needed when requested.

k Places appropriate forms on chart, and ensures that documents are stamped with correct patient identification.

l Alerts departments of tasks specific to them; i.e., X-Ray, Laboratory, Dietary, Admitting and Maintenance.

m Makes deliveries to other departments as requested.

n Notifies licensed person of STAT orders; initiates proper forms to implement order as quickly as possible.

o Economical in use of supplies and equipment. Is cost conscious when ordering supplies and equipment.

p Reviews supply orders to verify accuracy; stocks supplies in appropriate storage area and enters charges.

q Demonstrates ability to initiate "Code Blue" call and direct personnel to appropriate area.

r Completes assigned work in a timely manner. Notifies Charge Nurse if unable to complete assigned work.

7 After clinic hours duties:

a Interviews patients or his/her representative and obtains complete, accurate, personal, demographic and financial information necessary for admission.

b After medical screening exam verifies insurance coverage.

c All data areas on admit form are complete and accurate; spelling is correct.

d Is courteous to clients, in accordance with MMHS's guest relations program; helpful in explaining procedures and administrative.

e Verifies insurance information: private, Medical or Medicare.

f Prior insurance authorizations are obtained with specified time frame.

g Photocopies insurance cards; obtains signatures at admission.

8 Other duties as assigned.

a Performs other duties within capabilities as assigned by Supervisor or Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • Knowledge of basic clerical skills with background and experience with computers - preferred

Skill Requirements:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in medical terminology by passing a medical terminology exam with 80% or greater (administrated by MMH)

Licensing Requirements:

  • Current AHA BLS - required

  • Completion of Certified Nurse Assistant training program - preferred

Language Requirements:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit for 2 hours and stand/walk for 10 hours or more per day.

  • Must be able to push/pull and lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

Special Demands:

  • Ability to work with others and to perform a variety of assigned duties.

Special Considerations:

  • Will be dealing with patients of all ages to include; children/pediatrics, adolescents, adults and elderly/geriatrics.
