Job Description:

Performs routine patient/resident care under the supervision of Physicians, Surgeons Assistants and Nurses. Recognizes and reports significant observations. Strives for a variety of opportunities to use clinical skills, offer patient/family teaching and participate in a multidisciplinary approach to care.

1.Assists Physicians, Surgeons Assistants and Nurses, under supervision, in a multitude of patient procedures including, but not limited to, EKG's, phlebotomy, orthopedic splinting, cane and crutch preparation, CPR, defibrillation, catheters, POC Testing/Glucose analyzer, obtaining and recording vital signs and recognizing, reporting and assisting in resolution of life-threatening conditions.

2.Prepares set-up for procedures (i.e. suturing, surgery, spinal taps, foley insertion, chest tube insertion, trauma thoracotomy, lavage, slit lamp and orthopedic reduction).

3.Maintains department equipment through testing functions (i.e. cleaning/disinfection after use, set-up of Pleur-evac, vents, Gomko and suction devices). Maintains knowledge of current Emergency Department Technology.

4.Assists in examination and management during procedures (i.e. OB/GYN, neurological, respiratory, cardiac, emotional and behavioral, trauma and overdose emergencies).

5.Assists in transporting patients from vehicles, ambulance, wheelchairs and beds utilizing proper inline stabilization, patient positioning, body mechanics and application of extremity and spinal devices, etc.

6.Documents patient information necessary for admission, procedures, discharge and transfers. Documents all procedures performed and obtains needed medical records information for all healthcare team members.

7.Assists the inventory Clerk/Transporters with general clerical duties as needed (i.e. checking, ordering and/or stocking supplies in the Emergency Department).

8.Performs related duties as assigned.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Associated Degree, preferred.

  • Certificate by the New York State Department of Health as an EMT, required. AEMT certification, preferred.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, required, within one (1) year of employment.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in an acute hospital setting or related clinical experience, required.

  • Demonstrated competency in at least one of the following, preferred: Electrocardiogram (EKG) testing; venipuncture procedures; and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Performs delegated patient care activities while ensuring patient safety. 1. Implements and communicates the age specific plan of care and gives thorough reports at change of shift and relief time. Communicates with team members regarding the need for special equipment and supplies, and implementation of care per established policy. 2. Participates in turnover activities and room set up for each surgical procedure, including connection of suction, electrical cords, power cables and electrocautery; break down of operating room following each surgical procedure; assists with ensuring adequate supply of stock for patient care. 3. Monitors each case to ensure all infection control measures are met and all sterilization standards are adhered to. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and monitors the aseptic technique of the surgical team; documents accordingly and takes corrective action, as necessary. 4. Adheres to and monitors principles of aseptic techniques in the clinical environment including use of sterile instruments and supplies. Follows procedure for decontaminating of all instruments used during the procedure and assists with instrument processing and sterilization. 5. Maintains environmental controls and takes appropriate precautions regarding waste disposal. 6. Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy. Takes appropriate action when counts are incorrect. 7. Ensures appropriate and safe use of equipment and instrumentation prior, during and post-operatively. "Second assists" as needed under the direction of the surgeon. Correctly holds retractors as prescribed by the supervising physician; anticipates the need for surgical equipment and supplies and secures same. Checks and or troubleshoots equipment for proper functioning prior to use and removes malfunctioning equipment for repair. 8. Assists surgeon with patient care procedures including proper labeling of all specimens from surgical field, tapping mallet and cutting suture (licensed personnel only) and performing surgical skin prep. 9. Performs related duties as assigned. * ADA Essential Functions Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required * Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required. OR (meets one for the following) * Completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; * Provides evidence that the person was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015; or * In the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that of a surgical tech. * a person may be employed or contracted with to practice surgical technology during the 12-month period immediately following successful completion of a surgical technology program, but may not continue to be employed beyond that period without documentation that the employee holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential required. * Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required. * Ability to function effectively in emergency situations.
