This position is part time- 72 hours per two week pay period- and benefit eligible. Usual hours are 11am-11pm.
Under the supervision and/or direction of the ED Nurse Manager, House Coordinator or Staff Nurse, performs patient care and secretarial duties while functioning as the focal communication source in the nursing station.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs routine patient care under the direction of the RN including fingerstick blood sugar, enema, non-sterile dressing application, EKGs.
Obtains and records temperature, pulse, respiration, pulse oximetry, weight, height, blood pressure.
Assists with elimination as needed and accurately measures and documents intake and output.
Maintains sterile techniques during sutures tray set-up and all sterile procedures.
Assists in the collection, labeling and transporting of specimens to the laboratory as well as communicating results to nurses and physician.
Assists with patient discharges as needed.
Assists with ensuring patient safety related to falls, suicidal patients, elopements, and assaults etc.
Answers call lights and anticipates patient's needs. Reports unusual findings regarding patient or family to nursing staff.
Reports abnormal findings of IV sites to RN. Discontinues IV angiocatheter and documents appropriately.
During critical situations, may act as liaison between family and Emergency Department staff.
Notifies appropriate service for transportation of patient to another facility and prepares appropriate documentation to be sent with patient.
Transcribes orders accurately from the physician order sheet into the clinical information system and/or uses downtime slips when indicated.
Schedules diagnostic tests with ancillary departments and writes information on plan of care.
Notifies Mental Health of consults.
Is responsible for a complete patient medical records including labeling, documenting, signatures, diagnosis, charging and copying as needed.
Maintains unit stock/supplies at par levels and in working order.
Answers telephone, uses radio and makes calls and communicates information to the appropriate person.
Logs all patients in the Emergency Department log book
Communicates all pertinent patient information.
Compiles department statistics daily/monthly.
Participates in chart review as part of the departmental quality improvement plan, as requested.
Utilizes hospital and unit specific policy and procedure manuals and appropriate reference material as resources.
