POSITION SUMMARY: Performs activities which assist the Department of Emergency Services in providing a safe and monitored environment for at-risk patients under the direction of the Emergency Department Charge Nurse. Provides patient observations (continuous observations, one to one, or one to two patient observations) and/or safety checks (every 15 min or 5 min) as directed. The incumbent will effectively interact with the patient(s), their significant others and the nursing staff. Will communicate the general condition of the patient, safety issues or concerns directly with the Nursing staff and/or Crisis. Provides comfort measures and updates to ED patients/families awaiting care or disposition. # EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must have certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire or receive certification within a month after hire and maintain clinical competency during employment with ECHN in this role. Must be trained in PMT and de-escalation techniques, as prescribed by ECHN, and receive certification within 6 months of hire into the role.

EXPERIENCE:

Coursework in psychology or the behavioral health field is desirable.

COMPETENCIES: Position requires exemplary customer service and strong communication skills.# Basic computer skills. Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, including patient restraint when responding to patient emergency codes.

Provides continuous observations, one to one or one to two patient observations and or safety checks (every 5 min or every 15 min) Acts as communication liaison between patients/families and ED clinical staff. Displays sensitivity to patient family concerns, in a nonjudgmental manner. Displays appreciation of diversity. Provides accurate and up-to-date information to patients/families after obtaining information from ED clinical staff. Answers patient call bells. Provides accurate directions to other areas of the Hospital, bathroom, cafeteria, etc. Facilitates safe and courteous wheelchair assistance to patients/family members when needed. Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients. Collects, reports and assists in documentation of data. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Facilitates patient preparation for evaluation, undressing, and obtaining vital signs. Assists with room cleaning after patient departure. Maintains neat orderly patient rooms. Assist with the distribution of meal trays including opening containers for pts and removal of trays when pt is done eating. Collects urine specimens, labels and sends specimens to lab as ordered. Assist with stocking within the ED. Maintains collaborative working relationship with other departments, referring issues when appropriate.# i.e., Nursing, Security, Care Management, and the Patient Representatives Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit. Participates in Early Response codes and Dr. Strong codes, attendance at PMT refresher trainings. Effectively uses psychological and physical management techniques to manage violent or potentially violent situations consistent with Physical Management Training (PMT), including restraint.

EXPERIENCE: Should have a basic familiarity with the use of personal computers and keyboards, some basic skill in Microsoft Word and Outlook is desirable but not required. Knowledge of medical insurance is helpful. Registration experience required. COMPETENCIES: Exemplary Customer Service and English communication skills are a must.
