Job Description:

Embedded tutors regularly attend class sessions of designated Gateway Math courses in-person and online to provide direct academic support. In collaboration with and under the guidance of the course instructor, embedded tutors provide coaching assistance, interventions, and tutoring in one-on-one and small groups, lab, and activity settings. In addition, specialists also conduct individual and group tutoring sessions outside of scheduled class times. Specialists provide students with individualized assistance and support during and outside of class, and they model successful student behavior and encourage student engagement and participation. If classes occur in person, tutoring will occur primarily in the Niceville campus and the Fort Walton, Crestview, and DeFuniak satellite campuses. Tutoring will also take place online.

  • Participation in scheduled two-day, pre-semester training sessions is mandatory along with regularly scheduled training and collaboration sessions.

  • Establish contact with students on the first day of each semester in courses.

  • Attend planning meetings with course instructor(s) and Academic Intervention Specialists during the first week of classes and beyond throughout the semester.

  • Reach out to students in need of tutoring and coordinate individualized support, as needed.

  • Provide tutoring during class in one-on-one interactions and/or small groups, labs and activities dependent on instructor direction.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, other embedded tutors, Academic Intervention Specialists and other Title III team members on participating in and offering feedback for workshops, activities, and other research-based tutoring strategies designed to improve student learning outcomes.

  • Facilitate and encourage participation in regularly scheduled group tutoring sessions aligned with course content in-person and online for assigned core gateway courses.

  • Assist students in learning how to effectively utilize technology, take notes, and effectively use study skills in preparation for class and assessments.

  • Serve in a mentoring capacity, helping students foster connections with intervention and support services.

  • Actively engage with students to address learning gaps and reinforce key concepts.

  • Foster a positive learning environment and model good student behavior.

  • Provide high-quality interventions in Mathematics according to Instructor specifications.

  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, Associates/Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • A grade of B or higher in Calculus 1.

  • A recommendation from a content expert (instructor, former instructor, department chair, university supervisor, etc.). Someone who can speak to the candidate's content expertise and ability to communicate in the content area.

  • Previous tutoring experience preferred.

  • Ability to discuss and explain math concepts.

  • Skilled in interpersonal, oral and non-verbal communication skills.

  • A demonstrated level of leadership, responsibility and accountability.

  • Ability to navigate online platforms to facilitate virtual tutoring.

  • Ability to attend classes on the Niceville, Fort Walton, Crestview and potentially DeFuniak Springs campuses.

Additional Information:

Classification: Part-Time

Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour

Hours: Up to 29 hours per week

Location: Niceville Campus

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
