Purpose Statement:
The job of Elementary/Middle School Para-Librarian is done for the purpose/s of overseeing and maintaining operation of library, media center and computer lab; processing and distributing text and library books and periodicals; and maintaining and reporting records of activities.

Essential Functions
Assesses malfunctions of hardware and/or software applications in the library for the purpose of determining appropriate actions to maintain computer and internet operations.
Coordinates library materials (e.g. selection, acquisition and cataloging, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and maintaining relevant, age appropriate reading, computer, and resource materials for student and staff use.
Coordinates various activities (e.g. students, teachers, technical support personnel, book fairs, fund raising programs, class visits, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining library and computer lab operations and/or generating revenues to purchase additional library materials.
Directs Instructional Assistants, student workers and volunteers for the purpose of guiding and monitoring their activities related to library operations.
Facilitates training and use of automated circulation systems by elementary/middle school Media/Tech Assistants for the purpose of maintaining a coordinated cataloging system throughout the district.
Implements circulation procedures for the purpose of assuring availability of materials for student and staff use.
Instructs students and teachers for the purpose of educating them on the proper use of the library resources and/or complementing classroom instruction with various software applications and the use of computer technology.
Maintains materials inventory (e.g. library books, library hardware/software, media equipment and related instructional materials, archives of television programs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials as required.
Monitors student activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conducive to learning.
Oversees the daily operation and schedule of the media center, under the supervision of the Principal, for the purpose of maintaining a comprehensive, corrdinated and organized media center that supports and compliments the instructional process.
Prepares various reports and documents (e.g. reports, instructions, memos, circulation reports, over due books, fines, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
Processes library books, curriculum materials, periodicals, software and related library media center materials (e.g. logging into master files; identifying receiving site, producing required reports, recovering delinquent materials, etc. ) for the purpose of providing students and staff with required materials.
Responds to verbal and written inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or referral to appropriate source.
Other Functions
Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications; adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; operating equipment used in media centers; and planning and managing projects.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: elements of library operation; age appropriate literature; computer and internet operations; assertive discipline techniques; concepts of grammar and punctuation; equipment and materials utilized in media centers; federal, state and local policies, procedures and practices; health standards and hazards; and principles of directing and motivating students

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.

Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied backgrounds; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions; adapting to changing work priorities; creating an environment conducive to learning; directing and motivating students; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working effectively with students, staff and community; working with detailed information/data; and working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the Organization's services.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 35% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

Continuing Educ. / Training
Hold an Associate's Degree or two years equivalent education or pass required test to become certified as Highly Qualified under the NCLB Act within three months of hire; hold and maintain First Aid/CPR Card.
