REPORTS TO: Building Principal
EVALUATION: Annual Evaluation by Principal
Special Education Endorsement full approval by the State Board of Education in one or more areas of Special Education for Emotional Impaired, Specific Learning Disability, Autism, or Cognitively Impaired preferred.
Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to listen and to give directions and instructions
Strong background and experience working with students with behavioral challenges
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Outstanding communication skills - verbal and written
A strong commitment to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, as demonstrated by experience with co-teaching or other collaborative delivery models
Demonstrate ability to implement research-based instructional strategies for math, reading and writing to address academic needs of students with various disabilities (eg. ASD, LD, EI, CI)
Demonstrate knowledge and skill in a variety of flexible positive behavior support intervention strategies
Have specific training and/or experience in the area of behavior management, crisis prevention and intervention, conducting functional behavior assessments and writing individual behavior plans.
Proficiency integrating technology into instruction as a tool for student learning
Knowledge and ability to implement data collection techniques for monitoring student growth
Understanding of universal supports, accommodations and modifications to general education curriculum
Understanding of pertinent learning intervention practices, such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
Demonstrate ability to independently and accurately implement the requirements of IDEA and Michigan's Special Education Rules on behalf of caseload students
Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention preferred
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop, evaluate, coordinate, conduct, and implement REED, MET and IEPs for caseload students with a variety of disabilities
Maintain classroom lesson plans and student records for attendance, performance and progress with clear objectives
Assist in maintaining a safe and supportive educational environment
Provide instruction that is supportive of general education curriculum, whether in a pullout model or a co-teaching setting for students to achieve their academic goals
Collaborate and communicate with general education teachers, other special education team members, administrators and parents to meet the needs of students for a safe and organized educational environment to optimize student learning
Assist staff in assessing, developing and maintaining individual behavioral/education plans
Collaborate with staff to enhance understanding of all aspects of the student's development and its impact on learning
Provide assistance to students to allow their continued participation in their learning environment, especially in terms of social skills and functional activities.
Active participant in staff meetings, committees, professional development, school and district wide events as required for the position
Exhibit a positive demeanor and support a positive work environment.
Integrate technology effectively in a variety of forms on a daily basis as appropriate
Maintain consistent attendance and report to work on time as expected
Complete assigned tasks, reports, and other requirements on time
Other duties as assigned by administration
