This is an Adminitrative position on a 205 day contract.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Title: ELEMENTARY SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

Reports to: Executive Director of Pupil Services

Job Objectives:

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Pupil Services, performs special education coordinator services; observes, consults with and assists mild/moderate and moderate/severe special education teachers; designated instruction and related services providers and general education teachers. Communicates with and provides support to site-level administrators in the operation and compliance of special education programs and services in conformance to District, State and Federal objectives. This position requires subject matter expertise in special education programs and related services. Directly related administrative and leadership experience is necessary to manage the duties and responsibilities of this position. The job requires the ability to analyze, develop and offer alternative solutions to a variety of complex issues and concerns. The incumbent frequently meets with teachers, parents and support and administrative personnel to influence, motivate and monitor the objectives of the district and department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Ohio license in Administration (Principal Licensure) or School Psychology.

  • Teaching experience as an intervention specialist is preferred.

  • Documentation of a clear criminal record.

  • Training in de-escalation and behavioral management techniques

  • Experience writing, implementing and monitoring treatment plans.

  • Demonstrates the ability to access community resources appropriate to the case work needs of students. Available to respond to student assistance emergencies.

  • Experience working with preschool and school age special education programming.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Provides emergency consultation as needed. Facilitates parent, student and district staff involvement in decision-making and intervention processes.

  • Monitors education laws, rules and regulations related to special education, as well as preschool licensing and Step Up to Quality.

  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.

  • Promotes a favorable image of the school district. Encourages community partnerships that enhance district programs and services.

  • Participates in MTSS meetings.

  • Provides training and mentoring to new staff.

  • Reviews preschool and special education programming to provide mentoring and coaching to improve support.

  • Helps teachers, parents and students understand intervention goals and how they relate to the educational program.

  • Develop budget proposals and help to manage preschool and special education resources.

  • Advocates for children. Helps ensure that policies and procedures support non-biased assessment and program planning activities.

  • Complies with state model policies and procedures for the education of students identified as having a disability. Works with staff to ensure that services are provided in the least restrictive educational environment. Participates in the due process procedures as requested.

  • Conducts meetings and provides staff guidance for functional behavior assessments (FBA) and manifestation determination meetings. Ensures that all appropriate paperwork is accurate, complete and becomes part of a student's permanent record.

  • Assists and guides the development of behavior intervention plans as part of the IEP process.

  • Observes students in classroom settings and prepares written observation records for teachers and administrators.

  • Works with district staff to carry out "child find" and preschool/kindergarten screening activities.

  • Schedules home visits when necessary to support program goals.

  • Works with community services associated with students' programs and refers to outside agencies as appropriate.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

  • Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.

  • Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.

  • Duties may require traveling to meetings and work assignments.

  • Duties may require prolonged use of a computer keyboard and monitor.

  • Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.

  • Duties may require working during the evening and/or weekend.
