Supervises: Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Custodians, Secretary, Cafeteria Staff

Job Summary: To establish a vision and facilitate all functions of the school: instructional issues, accountability issues, communications with staff, parents and community, student issues, teacher issues, building and grounds maintenance, transportation issues

Essential Functions:

1.Coordinate and supervise the school's instructional program.

  • Communicate with teachers about instruction and set appropriate instructional goals.

  • Review teacher's plans/pacing charts and ensure alignment to NCSCS.

  • Review lesson plans.

  • Review student work.

  • Evaluate field trip requests.

  • Actively participate in the Care Team process for at-risk and special needs students.

  • Provide quality staff development activities that are aligned to the School Improvement Plan and to individual teacher's professional growth plans.

2.Interview and hire high quality staff members who embrace the school's philosophy of teaching/learning.

  • Follow county procedures for interviewing and hiring according to the Board of Education approved personnel manual.

3.Observe and evaluate employees.

  • Observe instruction and provide feedback through formative evaluations for licensed staff members according to Board of Education Policy and state laws.

  • Assist teachers in the development of professional growth plans.

  • Conduct professional dialog sessions with teachers to review their portfolios.

  • Complete summative evaluations and review these with teachers according to Board of Education Policy and state laws.

  • Evaluate annually all classified employees: teacher assistants, secretary/SIMS operator, custodians, cafeteria manager. Hold individual conferences to review evaluations.

  • Plan and implement procedures leading to the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of the school.

  • Develop a master schedule annually.

  • Develop duty schedules for student supervision before, during, and after school.

  • Work with staff members to develop and implement a Safe Schools Plan and a Crisis Management Plan.

  • Conduct and supervise monthly fire drills and other drills for student safety.

  • Encourage an inviting school environment through celebrations of student and staff successes.

5.Establish and maintain an open line of communication between and among staff members, parents, and the community.

  • Develop a Staff Handbook that is updated annually. Review and discuss the contents with staff members.

  • Develop and disseminate a Parent-Student Handbook that is updated annually. Emphasize specific information through parent letters and memos and at PTSO meetings.

  • Develop and disseminate a weekly memo to all staff members in order to provide up-to-date information.

  • Plan and schedule regular faculty meetings.

  • Schedule and hold face-to-face conferences with parents to address specific issues.

6.Implement the school budget/expenditure process.

  • Include staff members and parents in the budget planning process.

  • Follow county procedures for encumbering and spending state, local, and federal funds.

  • Maintain accurate records for all school financial issues.

7.Coordinate all aspects of school level tasks relating to the North Carolina testing program and ABCs.

  • Provide teacher training for test administrations.

  • Instruct staff members in the test data analysis process and encourage the use of test data in planning.

  • Follow all state and local procedures regarding test security and dissemination of testing materials.

  • Schedule test administration times, including testing for students with modifications.

8.Establish and implement a school-wide discipline plan in accordance with Board of Education Policy and state law.

  • Involve staff members and School Improvement Team members in the development of the plan.

  • Communicate the plan to students and parents.

  • Consistently implement the plan.

  • Update the plan annually.

9.Oversee facility needs.

  • Maintain a safe, inviting school environment by promoting cleanliness and neatness both inside the school facility and on the school grounds.

  • Work cooperatively with custodians and maintenance personnel to report facility needs and follow-up.

  • Inform the superintendent and director of maintenance about major facility needs.

  • Develop a priority list of facility needs/improvements as part of the annual budget planning process.


  1. Facilitate issues relating to school bus transportation.

  • Secure bus drivers.

  • Deal with student behavior issues while riding school buses.

  • Work cooperatively with the transportation director in issues relating to bus routes.

  • Meet with bus drivers to review and discuss school procedures and how these procedures relate to bus transportation issues.


  1. Work with the cafeteria manager to provide nutritional meals for students and faculty.

  2. Coordinate and supervise all school accountability issues.


  • Work directly with the School Improvement Team to review and update annually the School Improvement Plan.

  • Analyze test data.

  • Provide additional assistance for at-risk students such as after school tutoring, homework lab, working with volunteer tutors, etc.

  • Inform all stakeholders of accountability issues and procedures, especially student accountability issues as they relate to state gateways.


  1. Make continued personal professional growth a vital issue.

  • Attend all appropriate administrative meetings and conferences.

  • Maintain active membership in high quality professional organizations.

  • Read current literature.

  • Keep up to date on state and local educational issues.

  • Set annual goals/objectives.

  • Be knowledgeable of and comply with school board policies and state laws.


  1. Work with the staff to provide student leadership opportunities.

  • Encourage appropriate student clubs.

  • Encourage and support appropriate community involvement projects.


  1. Attend and participate in school and county events.

  • Attend PTSO meetings.

  • Attend student activities.

  • Attend appropriate county meetings.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

  • Have or eligible for NC license in School Administration

  • Three years of elementary or middle school teaching experience

  • Must posses good organizational skills and people skills

Terms of Employment: 12 months - Principals' Salary Scale

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal and Superintendent.

Environmental Factors:

This position requires frequent walking and normal office environment.
