Job Description

Job Title: Principal-Elementary School; Puente de Hozho (Trilingual School)

Reports to: Superintendent

Start Date: July 1, 2024

1.0 FTE; Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Arizona State Retirement)

Puente de Hózhó (PdH) Elementary School is a trilingual language school located in Flagstaff, Arizona and is a part of the Flagstaff Unified School District. PdH has two dual-language programs comprised of a Navajo Immersion Language Program and a Spanish-English Bilingual Program. We serve students from Kindergarten through 5th-grade, and a 6-12 International Baccalaureate Continuum is being established to complement PhD's programming. PdH is also proud to call itself an International Baccalaureate Candidate School.

Summary of Function

To plan, organize and implement an excelling learning environment that guides and encourages students to meet their educational potential. The principal will promote and maintain high student achievement by providing curricular and instructional leadership, maintaining overall school site operations. Is responsible for receiving, distributing and communicating information to enforce school, District and State policies and initiatives.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Valid AZ Department of Education Administrative Certificate - required

  • Candidates applying who are located out of Arizona are requested to include their states administrative certificate

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university - required

  • Emphasis in supervision, educational administration or elementary curriculum preferred

  • Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement or English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual endorsement is required within one year of hire

  • Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card - Required prior to start date

  • Three years successful experience in teaching, administration and supervision of staff - preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Navajo - preferred

  • International Baccalaureate Program experience - preferred

Duties and responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains a positive and effective learning climate in the school.

  • Leads faculty, staff, parents and the community to work collaboratively to fulfill the goals and mission of the school.

  • Facilitates the design and initiation of programs to meet specific needs of the school, involving Site Council, parents, and staff members.

  • Is personally responsible for the daily operations of the school, including staffing, budgets, and district level requirements.

  • Works with members of the central administrative staff on school opportunities which may include such topics as transportation, special services and student academic performance.

  • Champions district policies and administrative regulations.

  • Actively engages students and parents and staff to ensure a positive school environment.

  • Responsible for the performance development, management and evaluation of all staff.

  • Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes.

  • Supervises and evaluates the school/s extracurricular programs.

  • Fosters an environment that encourages staff to be innovative with instructional strategies and collaborative with other staff for the purpose of meeting student needs.

  • Actively contributes and participates in district initiatives. Supervises and evaluates the school's professional and support staff.

Working conditions

Indoor - classroom environment. Outdoor - all weather conditions and temperatures. Playground environment. Contact with public, employees, children and parents. Exposure to noise, dusts, gas and fumes.

Physical requirements

Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform the aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting and moving for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, stooping (moving to eye level of the student), hold and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability required.

Equipment, Aids, Tools and Materials

Uses blackboards, whiteboard, easel, bulletin board, computers, video projectors, chalk, markers, and office or instructional equipment. FUSD recognizes that ever changing development of technology but expects all staff to keep abreast of changing technology opportunities and use tools and devices provided to them.

Mental Tasks

Communicates verbally and in writing. Reads. Analyze and evaluate student progress and course curriculum. Develop, implement and evaluate plans. Manages classroom. Promotes learning and ensures safety. Perform functions from written and oral instruction and from observing and listening to others. Evaluate written materials to include written assignment and test

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The 2019-2020 salary range for the district's Elementary School Principal is $ 90,155 - $ 95,356, based on a twelve-month contract, consistent with Arizona law. A comprehensive fringe benefits package is also included.

NOTE: The ideal candidate for this position will have, at time of application, a valid IVP fingerprint clearance card and the appropriate Arizona Department of Education certificate as stated in this job announcement. (Deadline to meet all requirements: June 30, 2024). Should you not meet this deadline, administrators will be given the option to re-post the position to interview more candidates OR request an extension of the deadline date. Please note that a Letter of Intent to Hire" is not a binding offer of employment and no employment contract between you and the District exists until such time as the District Governing Board approves the issuance of an employment contract at a public meeting.
