Position Summary:

The Professional Educator Licensed School Nurse coordinates the school health program including the delivery of services to students. The nurse will provide and/or delegate services including first aid, care for ill students, and emergency care to students and staff; identifies health problems; makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment; maintains appropriate documentation. They will collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to promote a healthy school environment.

Professional/Personal Characteristics:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act as it relates to school nurse practice.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and incorporates the standards of practice of a school nurse in Illinois (JCAR) into daily practice

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and incorporates the NASN Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice into daily practice.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the school nurse's role in special education with an emphasis on the Special Education Medical Review component of the special education evaluation process in Illinois.

Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Upholds the mission and vision of D89 and works to implement the priorities outlined in the District Strategic Plan and the Building School Improvement Plan.

  • Provides direct professional nursing care, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational accommodations, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.

  • May delegate direct professional nursing tasks per the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

  • Demonstrates computer literacy and competency with the district's existing technology.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of current legislation, regulations, policies, litigation, and ethical issues related to the provision of health services in the educational setting.

  • Demonstrates competency in confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

  • Demonstrates effective communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action and meet the health and safety needs of students.

  • Maintains a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.

  • Maintains and implements a comprehensive school health program.

  • Develops and implements communicable disease prevention and control protocols in cooperation with local and state public health agencies and school administration.

  • Manages school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act and IL School Code requirements.

  • Advocates for inclusive health-related policies and protocols in compliance with state mandates and current standards of health practices that accommodate students with diverse health needs, including those with chronic conditions or disabilities.

  • Participates in student problem-solving teams: weekly SST meetings and special services team meetings as needed.

  • Coordinates concussion care, managing the student's return to learn process following a concussion injury and collaborates with athletic trainers for student athletes.

  • Participates in the district concussion protocol team as chairperson.

  • Participates as a crisis team member. Provides crisis intervention for students and staff when sudden illness and/or injury occur.

  • Manages and makes recommendations for the health office's annual budget and critical needs

requests. Collaborates with staff to purchase and maintain health and some OSHA supplies and equipment for the health office and school.

  • Advocates for access to healthcare resources and services for all students, regardless of their

socioeconomic background.

  • Collaborates with community healthcare providers to enhance access to medical care for students.

  • Participates as a resource and specialist in health issues across the school and district environment.

  • Provides staff in-service programs on health topics as needed.

  • Demonstrates professional development by participating as a member of professional school nursing and educational organizations and utilizing continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No evaluative duties. Supervision of procedures, responsibilities, and logistics in the school building nurses' offices is required.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form. Ability to write reports as needed. The ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.

  • Ability to complete basic mathematical operations and apply concepts of general mathematics and algebra.

  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to perform essential duties within school district requirements and Board of Education policies.

  • Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear.

  • The employee is frequently required to bend, stand, walk, and operate office and computer equipment as well as to reach with hands and arms, repeating actions with the same hand, arm or finger motion.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling and significant finger dexterity.

  • The position requires meeting deadlines with time constraints, interacting with the public and staff, and irregular or extended work hours at times.

  • The position might require the occasional assistance in training and assisting staff to toilet low incidence students.

Qualifications

Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse endorsement

Active Registered Nurse licensure in Illinois

Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing

Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program completion

IDPH Vision and hearing certification preferred but not required

Prior professional nursing experience in school nursing specialty or related experience in a school health services capacity preferred
