JOB TITLE: ELEMENTARY RESOURCE - CATEGORICAL TEACHER

FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

JOB SUMMARY: The teacher will provide direct individual and group instruction to eligible students. This position also requires consultative skills in working with general education teachers and the ability to modify curricula and approach to accommodate special education students in the special education and general education setting.

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or BS; MA preferred.

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a special education endorsement SV, Autism Spectrum Disorder.

  • Meet requirements of a highly qualified special education teacher.

  • Two years teaching experience with at least one year in special education.

  • Experience in working with students in groups and individually.

  • Competency in the administration and interpretation of academic ability testing.

  • Trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.

  • Ability to clearly communicate assessment results and learning plans, in written and oral form, to parents and professionals.

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of individual students.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with evaluation and IEP teams, special education and general education staff.

  • Ability to complete and maintain required records, forms, and reports in a professional and timely manner.

  • Ability to be flexible, to work independently, and to contribute as a member of a team.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, allocate time, and maintain schedule flexibility.

  • Ability to teach students the use of computer applications and implement technology specific to student's needs.

  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate behavior plans for use in general and special education settings.

  • Ability and desire to become an active member of a school staff through participation in committees and activities.

  • Experience working with non-speaking communicators and the use of visual communication systems/supports, such as core vocabulary.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but not be limited to):

  • Provide direct remediation to eligible students in small groups or individually.

  • Consult with classroom teachers to recommend and transfer programs into the instructional setting.

  • Schedule students for service.

  • Communicate consistently and effectively with parents/guardians.

  • Ability to use data to develop appropriate IEPs which will guide individual instruction.

  • Schedule IEPs in a timely manner; chair IEPs including preparation of paperwork.

  • Develop and implement behavior plans for students.

  • Work effectively with students varying skill levels and abilities.

  • Provide formal and/or informal assessment of a student's academic status and learning styles.

  • Ability to teach curriculum appropriately aligned to the Common Core Curriculum and Extended Common Core Curriculum.

  • Work with students and teachers to identify, teach, and implement accommodations for special education students in general education classes.

  • Responsible for administration of MSTEP, MI-ACCESS and other required assessments.

  • Be knowledgeable in evidence-based, universal academic, behavioral, communication, and social strategies/interventions for students with ASD that can be implemented in multiple settings (such interventions include but are not limited to: forecasting tools, visual supports, differentiated output strategies, reinforcement/shaping strategies, behavioral scripting, Peer to Peer, functional communication strategies, etc.)-START training relevant to such strategies preferred.

  • Utilize various assessments/assessment practices for ongoing student problem-solving/programming, including CETA-R, functional behavior assessments. etc.

  • Be able to collaborate with parents, outside agencies, and other educational professionals (including general education teachers/administrators, ancillary support staff, para professionals, etc.) to optimize success of students within their LRE
