0.5 FTE Elementary Math Coordinator

Note - the Westwood Public Schools will consider combining this role with a part-time specialist role.

The Role
The Westwood Public Schools seeks a Math coordinator to lead the district's efforts to ensure high quality math instruction, and coordinates the implementation of recommendations for improvement across our Pre-School and four elementary schools . The ideal candidate will have a history of encouraging young learners to engage in authentic mathematical inquiry. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to developing students' habits as thinkers, as well as their conceptual understanding and computational fluency.

Nature and Scope
The Math coordinator leads a team of specialists who work with classroom teachers, principals and other members of school-based instructional leadership teams to assess students' math understanding and skills, analyze assessment data, develop and implement classroom-based interventions, and develop and implement small group intervention programming.

Required Qualifications
A Massachusetts DESE license, or eligibility for a license, as a math teacher or Supervisor/Director. Additional licenses in early childhood or elementary education preferred.
Master's degree in education
SEI endorsement, or substantive experience ensuring that curriculum is accessible to English language learners
Effective oral and written communication.
Familiarity with math assessment tools and intervention resources.
Deep understanding of how to effectively engage students and adults in inquiry-based learning
Experience, and demonstrated skill, managing long-term projects and initiatives
Demonstrated commitment to celebrating diversity, pursuing equity, and promoting integration
Experience incorporating Social Emotional Learning into classroom routines and core content lessons
Familiarity with trauma sensitive educational practices

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Work with Middle School STEM Department Head, High School Math Department Head and Assistant Superintendent to review, develop and implement of PreK - 12 math curriculum that is aligned with state standard
Oversee process of selecting high quality curriculum materials that support student learning
Create tools, structures and routines that support horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment
Ensure quality math instruction by:
Planning and leading professional development for classroom teachers
Supporting teachers through regular consultations, demonstrations, and coaching
Assisting faculty in the implementation and analysis of district common assessments
Collaborating with administrators, teachers and math specialist/coaches to design appropriate intervention and enrichment programs
Partnering with elementary principals to provide meaningful feedback that improves mathematical instruction
Work with elementary Literacy, Social Studies, Science and SEL Coordinators to support the development of project-based learning and to plan cross-discipline professional development
Partner with families and provide family programming that supports the development of mathematical skills
Ensure that curriculum integrates opportunities for social emotional learning
Promote culturally responsive teaching
Foster a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning community

Fulfill professional responsibilities by communicating effectively, using good judgment, meeting deadlines, engaging in professional development, reflecting on performance and making positive changes to improve student learning, being receptive to feedback, and completing assigned duties
Make positive contributions to the larger school community
Assume other responsibilities assigned by the assistant superintendent in accordance with collective bargaining provisions

Job Environment:
Work takes place in classrooms and other building rooms/areas, including offices, auditorium, gym, lunchroom and hallways, within a school building setting, primarily indoors. Job takes place in a high-performing school district with high expectations.

Physical Requirements:
Requires sufficient vision to read printed documents and to view detail on a computer screen for extended periods.
Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching, as well as carrying and occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs.
Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and in the classroom.
Ability to hear sounds clearly up to twenty feet.
Travel among buildings may be required.
