The Department of Teacher and Special Education at Central Michigan University invites applications for a fixed-term faculty appointment effective August 2024.

Fixed-term faculty are generally expected to teach four courses per semester. Courses may be face-to-face or online and at the undergraduate or graduate level. Fixed-Term Faculty may also: attend regular, relevant committee meetings; support committee work; engage in assessment of learning activities; help develop and promote CMU's TSE course offerings; and strengthen partnerships on and off campus.

This is an initial one-year appointment; however, reappointment is expected, subject to favorable evaluation and annual enrollment projections.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a Master's in Education with an emphasis in reading/literacy studies; PK-6 specialization in elementary literacy; and have completed at least three years of successful teaching at the PK-6 school level.

  • Candidates must have specialized knowledge in elementary literacy instruction and assessment; literacy development; and integrated language arts. In particular, candidates will be expected to teach courses on word study and fluency as well as foundations of reading instruction, in addition to the potential to instruct our pre-student teaching literacy methods course.

  • Candidates must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred credentials include a doctorate in education with an emphasis in reading/literacy studies.

  • Preferred qualifications include the ability to integrate instructional technology and diversity into teaching and student learning; successful experience teaching literacy in higher education; reading intervention or clinic experience.

  • Candidates should have familiarity with Michigan's Core Teaching Practices, the Michigan Standards for Preparation of Teachers of Lower Elementary (PK-3), and the Michigan Standards for Preparation of Teacher of Upper Elementary (3-6).

  • Candidates who have taught in higher education settings may provide documentation of successful experience teaching literacy in higher education.

  • Candidates applying for the position should be able to demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
