Positions are 1.0 FTE

JOB GOALS:
The goal of the Elementary Literacy Coach is to assist in building long-term capacity within school settings and among school staff to ensure that all students are achieving to the best of their capabilities in the area of literacy. The Coach will support classroom teachers and instructional assistants in effective implementation of high-quality lesson planning, instruction and assessments in the various areas of literacy, acting as a district leader in the use of data to improve outcomes.

The Literacy Coach will take a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working to directly improve English Language Arts (ELA) instruction, student learning and foster teacher development. This may include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teacher groups plan instruction, creating system-wide policies and procedures, and facilitating professional development.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must have the following:

Ability to: Understand and implement the instructional and assessment requirements necessary to assist students in reaching the content and performance standards in reading.

Use prior teaching and lesson development experience at all elementary grade levels to implement appropriate strategies and interventions to improve reading instruction and student results. Use previous experience working with tiered intervention systems in academics and behavior to implement appropriate and effective individualized and group interventions to improve outcomes. Plan, organize and facilitate assessment systems related to reading instruction. Design, develop and deliver successful staff development to teachers and instructional assistants and subsequently provide individual coaching and mentoring to staff in methods taught.

Skills to: Operate computers and required software efficiently and effectively including Microsoft Office or Google Suite of applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and navigate databases and spreadsheets to compile data and information to inform decision making; use and train others in the use of software to assist in effective reading instruction; plan lessons based on formative and summative assessment data; collaborate collegially with teachers and instructional assistants to identify areas for growth, model and assist them to develop best practices in reading instruction. Competently match resources to identified needs within budget parameters.

Knowledge of: the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children; effective intervention models and instructional coaching practices; effective behavior management methods; a variety of content area strands for elementary reading instruction including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension;

Maintains satisfactory attendance as defined in District policy and regulations.

Demonstrated success as a classroom teacher for a minimum of three years, including expanded teacher-leader roles over time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
Coordinate grade level teams of teachers to provide literacy instructional support.
Assist teachers and instructional assistants in understanding, developing and implementing the district adopted literacy curriculum and supplemental literacy mini-lessons.
Develop and facilitate the use of reviewing statewide assessment strand data in order to drive instruction.
Develop and implement a system of formal and informal feedback for mentored professionals.
Support classroom teachers with preparing for instruction, identifying both short-and long-term learning goals related to literacy instruction.
Support classroom teachers and instructional assistants with the implementation of appropriate learning experiences to teach literacy concepts and link them to the physical world.
Serve as a resource for identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement.
Provide support for adapting and modifying instructional strategies and materials, as necessary, to support all students' academic progress.
Use a variety of formal and informal assessments, including content and performance assessments, to monitor student progress and achievement of the instructional objectives.
Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
Identify and refer students who need additional services and support.
Communicate to students and parents the level of student achievement and progress towards established classroom, district, and state standards.
Participate in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information or sharing expertise.
Remain current with literacy instructional research.
Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or in self-identified professional growth activities.
Maintain professional confidentiality concerning individual student data and achievement.
Maintain a high level of professional integrity by adhering to the Teacher Standards and Practices requirements for an Ethical Educator as written in Board policy and State law.
Perform such other tasks as may be assigned by the Board or Administration.
Work constructively with colleagues and others for the purpose of improving the quality of a student's behavior and academic success.
Take all reasonable precautions to provide a safe, secure learning environment.
Participate in various meetings (e.g. staff, parent conferences, in-service training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information or sharing expertise.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
Possess or have the credentials to obtain a valid Oregon Teaching License.
Have a Bachelor's Degree and/or a Masters' Degree Elementary Education or Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading, preferably a reading endorsement.
Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card if required
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
