Library Medial Specialist

The Elementary Library Media Specialist reports directly to the Principal of the School and the Director of Technology & Innovation and is expected to work closely with all district personnel to provide high quality instruction to our divers student population.
Role & Responsibilities: The Library Media Specialist will:
Develop students and staff as effective users of ideas and information
Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, ethical users and producers of information
Instill a love of learning through reading
Ensure equitable access to information and library resources
Collaborate with Innovation Coaches to design and implement units of instruction focused on information literacy and being a responsible online citizen
Utilize Atlas Curriculum maps to align genre-focused units with grade-level standards
Leverage the School Library Program (SLP) to support with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and district
Duties:
Design, teach, and assess learning experiences in Library classes at three elementary schools
Collaborate with classroom teachers as a partner in the instructional process
Promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
Provide resources and programs that promote independent reading and writing in a variety of genres
Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users and producers of information
Teach research skills required to locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media
Educate students and staff to be safe and responsible digital citizens
Promote independent reading and writing in a variety of genres and reading levels
Instructional Partner
Understand Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS) and National School Library Standards (AASL)
Collaborate with teachers to design and teach engaging learning experiences and assessments that incorporate the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy), foster critical thinking, and promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
Design, teach, and support professional learning opportunities for staff
Evaluate, promote and use existing and emerging instructional technology to improve learning outcomes
Ensure that students and staff are effective and ethical users of ideas and information, including principles of copyright and fair use
Provide students and staff with flexible access to and assistance in using information and technology resources
Stay current in professional practices, educational research; actively participates in professional memberships
Library Manager
Maintain an organized and welcoming facility that helps students become independent users of the library.
Foster a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is an essential part of the learning community
Maintain a collection of print and non print resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the instructional strategies of the school community
Qualifications
In-depth knowledge of information literacy, children's literature, and digital learning
Demonstrated experience in implementation and integration of instructional technology into a variety of content areas and grade levels
Familiarity with emerging trends in libraries and digital learning to provide for the development of future-ready schools
Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
Minimum Requirements
Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as an Elementary Teacher
Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as Library Media Specialist (All Levels) OR within the first year of employment
Additional certification in Instructional Technology or Digital Literacy and Computer Science, preferred.
