JOB GOAL:

To provide a functional and inviting library that supports the school curriculum and recreational reading; to inform teachers, students, staff and community users of available library resources and learning tools; to serve collaborator and partner with classroom educators in instructional design and to offer direct research and library skills instruction to students.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This position is Nine and one-half (9.50) month contract (195 days), plus a benefits package. NOTE: Precise placement within the salary range will be determined based on experience and LRSD's salary placement guidelines. FLSA: EXEMPT.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree is required.

  • Must have Arkansas Teacher's License in Library Media.

  • Evidence of current trends in instructional technology.

  • Evidence of skills in the area of classroom management.

  • Experience as a practicing school library media specialist required.

  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills.

  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Evidence of a strong commitment to quality desegregated education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position.

  • Provides reading guidance for students and faculty, and to be able to recognize the interests and reading levels of the school population.

  • Works directly with the Coordinator of Instructional Technology concerning the organization and implementation of the library program.

  • Shares the responsibility for seeing that the library functions as an integral part of the school.

  • Serves as professional consultant to the principal, teachers and students in relating library materials to the curriculum and for enrichment.

  • Sets up and implements schedules with the approval of the principal of:(a) An effective program for teaching library skills. (b) An effective program of student research in collaboration with teachers;

  • Prepares library bulletins, bibliographies, room collections and special displays of available books and audiovisual materials for curriculum units.

  • Uses technology in instruction and promotes the use of technology in instruction with teachers.

  • Uses the State Library Frameworks to collaborate with the staff in correlating library activities within the curriculum.

  • Attends in service meetings and to participate in organizations that will promote professional growth.

  • Organizes, evaluates and maintains a balanced collection of books and other media which reflect the interests of the students and strengthen the instructional program of the school.

  • Orders prints and non-print materials for the library considering the requests from teachers, students, principal, the curriculum needs, the existing library collections, and the State Department of Education and North Central Association standard.

  • Catalogs and classifies all materials in a uniform manner using professional guidelines.

  • Uses the Spectrum system from Sagebrush Corporation to maintain the student database, the public access catalog, and all circulation records.

  • Maintains accurate records and proper statistics for various reports as necessary.

  • Makes an annual inventory of the library holdings and to present recommendations for improvement as requested.

  • Assumes responsibility for instructing faculty and students in the use of instructional technology.

  • Performs other duties may be assigned.

Mental Functions, Physical Requirements, and Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, go up and down stairs, operate foot and hand controls, use a telephone and write. Occasionally the employee must lift and/or move up to twenty (20) or more pounds. This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational materials and/or objects, and providing oral information. Must have the ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period, and to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year. Additional technical skills, knowledge, and abilities may be recommended by immediate supervisor and approved by the Human Resources Director.
