POSITION PURPOSE:

The position of Elementary Cook Lead is responsible for performing skilled cooking duties and may lead kitchen assistants in food production and preparation, serving and kitchen/cafeteria clean-up.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Determine quantities and variety of food to be prepared

  • Prepare food items according to standard menus, recipes and verbal instruction.

  • Assemble salads, sandwiches, desserts and prepares hot lunches.

  • Participates in the cleaning of the kitchen, cafeteria and equipment; assure that standards of sanitation and safety are met.

  • Maintain necessary supplies and goods for assigned meals.

  • Operate standard cooking equipment.

  • May plan meals, assist in budget development plans, keep records, make reports and control inventory.

  • May assist in serving.

  • Lead work of students and part-time help.

  • Orders produce, milk, food and paper products.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to and is directly supervised by the Nutrition Services Manager or designee.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

Required:

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent; one year experience in quantity food preparation;

  • Possess or be eligible for the State of Washington Department of Health Food and Beverage Handlers Permit.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

  • None

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

  • Fundamentals of cooking;

  • Methods and practices of ordering;

  • Producing and serving of food in large quantities.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to understand and carry out and written instructions;

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations with staff, students, and public;

  • Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations;

  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements;

  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

May work outdoors in inclement weather. May require physical mobility to move through a school campus, including up and down stairs and inside and outside.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Nutrition Services salary classification C ($ 22.95 to $ 25.50 per hour), 37.5 hours per week, for up to a 181 day annual assignment. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
