Title: Elementary Assistant Principal/Special Education Coordinator Qualifications:

  • Appropriately licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Education and Secondary Education in special education with additional licensure as a supervisor/director and/or assistant principal/principal.

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience.

  • Master's degree in special education and/or education administration.

  • Experience in curriculum development and curriculum modifications.

  • Knowledgeable regarding state and federal special education regulations.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated skills in instruction, management, planning, decision-making, and interpersonal and community relations.

  • Experience implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I) and fingerprint check.

Reports To: Winthrop School Principal and Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Job Goals: Work closely with the School Principal, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, and staff for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for providing leadership to the special educators and helping to implement the schools's PBIS system through the use of leadership, supervisory, administrative, and management skills in compliance with all applicable rules, regulations and policies of the school district. Work in collaboration with building Principal to create a safe, supportive, and responsive school environment. Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assists the principal in the overall administration for the purpose of complying with mandated requirements and meeting the mission of the school system in effective operations.

  • Coordinate the special education process for the school in accordance with state and federal statutory requirements.

  • Work in collaboration with the principal in regards to assignment, supervision and evaluation of special education teachers, general education teachers and paraprofessionals.

  • Coordinate with the principal to develop and maintain a continuum of special education programming.

  • Provide educational leadership for both special and general education. Review, evaluate, and recommend scientifically, research based intervention and remediation curriculum in in the areas of reading, mathematics, executive functioning skills and life skills.

  • Oversee the student assessment process including initial evaluations, three-year reevaluations, and independent evaluations. Meet with parents to explain the process. Insure the evaluation instruments are current and that they assess all suspected/known areas of disability.

  • Chair all eligibility team meetings.

  • Write IEPs and N1 (required summaries) for all eligibility meetings.

  • Assist with grant writing and management of grant funds.

  • Assist with the completion of state and federal reporting (i.e., communicate with private schools, complete specified reports, administer needs assessments).

  • Assists in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services for the purpose of ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the school site for quality delivery of services to students and staff.

  • Manages a variety of school administrative functions (e.g.student disciplinary policy, school/student schedules, reporting and monitoring student attendance, assigned personnel, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school, system and state policy and maintaining safety and efficiancy of school operations.

  • Assumes full responsibility for the building and program in the absence of the principal.

  • Building effective relationships with students, staff, parents and community members.

  • Maintain a safe and respectful environment, proper student conduct and student discipline.

  • Apply knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, current state standards and expectations, best and differentiated instructional strategies, and common assessment practices.

  • Provide instructional and organizational leadership for the school.

  • Promote an effective and inclusive learning climate in the school.

  • Support the school in adapting to the changing educational environment and implementing program improvements.
