We have an opening for an Art Teacher at Hanmer Elementary School. The Art Teacher will work to provide an exceptional and nurturing learning environment where students feel safe, valued and respected. On a daily basis the teacher will deliver instruction, continually assess student progress and growth, provide ongoing student supervision, regularly share written and verbal feedback with students and families, maintain records of student performance, and continually seek to develop professionally to bring the most current and innovative learning practices to the classroom.

Compensation: $54,394 - $107,777

The Art Teacher will be responsible for curriculum and lesson planning and delivery, providing learning activities appropriate to the age of the students in order to develop an interest in (and ability for) creative expression, and developing an understanding and appreciation of art in each student.

Duties include the following:

  • Prepare lesson plans and develop creative teaching and learning activities which reflect sound teaching principles and meet the needs/interests of students;

  • Establish and communicate clear learning objectives;

  • Develop age-appropriate instructional strategies to achieve the art curriculum goals;

  • Demonstrate and assist students to use different techniques, processes and media to develop art works aligned to their artistic abilities;

  • Inform students about cultural and historical influences on art;

  • Provide instruction that encourages students to understand and appreciate art;

  • Develop student drawing, coloring and painting techniques;

  • Encourage students to express their own personalities and thoughts through the creative process;

  • Assess and evaluate student performance on a regular basis;

  • Prepare progress reports and provide feedback about student progress;

  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is age-appropriate;

  • Set and maintain acceptable standards of classroom behavior to establish an orderly learning environment;

  • Show students how to properly use and care for materials, tools and equipment;

  • Monitor and maintain classroom inventory;

  • Work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team;

  • Plan and present art displays;

  • Performing related work and other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess Connecticut Elementary Art Teacher Certification (042);

  • Experience working with school students including academic content, lesson modification and delivery of services within an inclusive environment;

  • Must have strong collaboration and communication skills;

  • Knowledge of differentiated instructional strategies, strong classroom management skills, a working knowledge of data analysis and strong interpersonal skills;

  • Possess strong assessment and report writing skills;

  • Ability to handle and treat information confidentially;

  • Ability to relate effectively with staff, parents, students and the public;

  • Ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities;

  • Ability to work independently and with a sense of urgency;

  • Ability to motivate students, inspire trust and confidence in students, while working with patience and understanding.

This position currently includes a small component of traveling to another elementary school to teach one (1) class period every fourth day. Compensation for mileage traveled as part of this job assignment is provided.
