The mission of the State Highway Patrol is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people in North Carolina. The Electronics Technician I is primarily responsible for installing, removing and modifying equipment in vehicles for the NC State Highway Patrol. The assigned work location is Troop AX Radio Shop in Williamtson, NC (Martin County).

Job duties/responsibilities include the following:

  • Installing and removing mobile and portable radios, computers, speed measuring instruments, mobile video surveillance equipment, mobile emergency lighting and warning systems, mobile antennas, and associated electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment.

  • Analyzing issues, troubleshooting using digital and electronic testing devices and repairing the aforementioned equipment.

  • Analyzing and modifying standard circuitry to improve its performance or to perform special functions.

  • Applying working knowledge of electronic principles.

  • Disassembling and/or assembling vehicles for the installation and adaption of the aforementioned equipment.

  • Utilizing working knowledge of mathematical principles as applied to electronic circuit analysis.

  • Utilizing a general knowledge of vehicles and vehicle systems.

  • Reading and comprehending installation manuals.

  • Designing mounting devices for a wide variety of equipment.

  • Standing/working on feet for the majority of the workday.

  • Working as part of a team or without supervision in a safe manner.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The typical work schedule is Monday

  • Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM.

About the Division/Section:

The mission of the State Highway Patrol is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people in North Carolina. This section has the responsibility of managing a statewide communications system for the purpose of providing voice and analog/digital communication for the members of the N.C. State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), Criminal Justice Information Network (CJIN), and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Experience installing, repairing, and/or maintaining vehicle electronics or other low-voltage system(s).

  • Experience using power and/or hand tools.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Experience with assembly and/or disassembly of vehicles.

  • Experience with vehicle maintenance.

  • Experience working with public safety equipment.

  • Current possession of Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone Operator License (GROL).

  • Proficiency with corded and/or cordless power tools, hand tools, metal fabricating equipment, stationary equipment such as drill presses, band saws and grinding/sanding equipment.

NOTE: Recommended applicants must undergo a Criminal Background Investigation including a Drug Screening Test. Possession of a valid NC Driver's License by the date of hire is also a requirement.

Associate's Degree in Electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
