Duties

  • Provide comprehensive technical support for automated equipment systems (e.g., automatic packaging systems, tote conveyor systems, and drug dosing machines) assembled from numerous constituent units or subsystems including components such as controllers, sensors, bar code scanners, industrial controls and equipment, and pulse and counting mechanisms.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, installation, evaluation of system performance, repair, calibration, modification, and programming/reprogramming for various manufacturers' and models of programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and takes corrective actions to restore devices to fully operational levels. Corrective actions may include identifying replacement parts, supplies, or tools required (and requesting those items if not on hand) or requesting service from outside sources.

  • Evaluate corrective action alternatives for cost effectiveness, considering device repair history, device age and expected remaining lifetime, user needs, and parts availability.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 8 hours between 5:00am-5:00pm. Overtime periodically depending on mission.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/24/2024.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position, Electronics Technician. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes: providing comprehensive technical support for automated equipment systems such as automatic packaging systems, tote conveyor systems, and drug-dispensing machines; completing preventive maintenance, installation, evaluation, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing, and modification of subsystems as well as integrated systems; troubleshooting equipment problems and takes corrective actions to restore devices to fully operational levels. Work as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that shows progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. Using schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions: developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR,
  • Education: Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that included a major study in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR,
  • Combination of Education and Experience: You must possess an equivalent combination of successfully completed education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the position as outlined above that meets the requirements of the position. Only education in excess of the first year (18 semester hours) may be used to qualify applicants for the GS-09 level. NOTE: If using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your transcript is required.

Physical Requirements: Work involves various situations requiring bench and/or field work that requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, etc. Handles devices weighing up to 40 pounds and is sometimes called upon to handle objects weighing in excess of 40 pounds with the assistance of equipment or other personnel. Work requires frequent inspections of equipment and systems, which may involve considerable walking, bending, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other physical movements. Often works in areas that require special safety precautions to avoid injury to self or others (e.g., lock-out, tag-out (LOTO), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc.).
