The System Engineer is responsible for planning, documenting, implementing, and testing controller architectures and interfaces between Rheem water heaters and other entities (the cloud, other Rheem devices, utilities, etc). This role includes technology investigation, roadmap development, and prototyping, as well as suitability assessment and architecture development for application to Rheem products. A successful candidate will implement and extend a common controls platform strategy within Rheem. This is a key position on the electronic controls team within Rheem's Advanced Technology Integration organization, providing advanced technologies and systems solutions for Rheem's Water Heating business unit.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Define technology roadmap and lead probable development paths and develop technical solutions to new interconnection concepts. Work with product development groups in translating new concepts into production designs.

  • Develop design concepts or models, supervise prototyping, and conduct performance testing to determine feasibility of concepts

  • Develop test methods, coordinate implementation of experiments, evaluate test results, and prepare written reports of research findings

  • Coordinate contractual arrangements for developmental programs with outside suppliers or research organizations

  • Represent company in technical societies and keep the company advised of pertinent technological developments

  • Actively participate in patent documentation creation for new products/technologies

  • Active engagement with software, hardware, test, and product development teams to integrate new technology into the Rheem control platform.

  • Engage with Product Management to develop Product Requirements

  • Participate in product design reviews to ensure that products have required hardware and software features.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Computer Engineering

  • Experience with electronic controls design including communication interfaces, analog and digital circuit design

  • Familiarity with lab test equipment and board bring up

  • Knowledge of one or more of: WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular communication, Ethernet, IoT

  • Must demonstrate the following competencies:

HOW TO STAND OUT

  • Organize/supervise prototype build of circuit boards or product components

  • Knowledge or experience with HVAC or gas appliance development or application

  • Experience with electronic analysis methodologies and simulation

  • Design-of-Experiments (DOE)

  • Analyze and interpret technical procedures and government/agency regulations (UL, CSA, CE, FCC, etc.)

  • Cost analysis of electronic controls and designing to meet cost targets

  • Experience working with multiple departments such as R&D, marketing, manufacturing, service engineering, suppliers, and customers

Troubleshoots and resolves basic HVAC mechanical, electrical, and controls problems.  Responds to basic warranty calls. How you will do it * Loads system-level controller software. Performs basic commissioning and system diagnostics from system-level controllers to end devices (i.e. sensors, actuators, etc.) and completes all required commissioning documentation. * Keeps management and JCI contractor or customer informed of job progress and issues. * Calibrates systems requiring basic electronic test equipment. * Completes administrative tasks including but not limited to time sheets, expense reports, and on-site documentation. * Documents changes and provides information for as-built documentation. * Communicates with the JCI contractor or customer upon arrival and before leaving the work site. * Follows all safety standards and attends required safety training.  High degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety. What we look for Required * Demonstrated technical aptitude. * Able to use hand and power tools (i.e. drills, saws, etc.). * Basic computer skills required. * Attention to detail. * Good communication and listening skills. * Depending on location, the mounting and termination of low voltage devices may have special licensing requirements. Preferred * One to two years of experience in installing electronic and/or mechanical systems. * Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC systems.
