Job Title:

Electron Microscopy Technologist - SOM Pathology

Job Summary:

Responsible for day to day operation of the electron microscopy facility. Prepares tissues for viewing under an electron microscope, aligns and operates the microscope, and instructs others in its use.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences plus two (2) years of electron microscopy laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration:

Preferred: certification as an electron microscopy technologist by the Microscopy Society of America (MSA).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Basic laboratory/science skills, data entry skills, reading comprehension skills, organizational skills, record keeping ability. Knowledge of electron microscope techniques. Computer experience, especially with photo editing software such as adobe Photoshop Lightroom. The ability to communicate well, both verbally and written, the ability to teach and train others in EM equipment use and techniques including ancillary equipment use. The ability to work unsupervised and maintain a high degree of proficiency. Knowledge of interpreting structures (organelles) within cells and the quality of their preservation, as well as any morphologic changes due to tissue processing, and the ability to teach others how to make these determinations. Ability to perform tasks requiring a high degree of manual dexterity. Ability to coordinate the usage of the tem between users. Ability to create new methods and techniques to meet the needs of researchers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates and others who use the electron microscope.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the transmission electron microscope (tem) to scan sections and take micrographs of specimens.

  • Performs cleaning, maintenance and alignment procedures on the tem.

  • Processes tissue for tem including post-fixation, dehydration, embedding, and staining.

  • Uses digital photography software to adjust images taken on the tem.

  • Maintains computers so that images taken on the tem are archived on backup hard drives.

  • Provides technical guidance, instruction and consultation to faculty and staff.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment, including reordering as required.

  • Creates innovative ways to accomplish new research techniques.

  • Gives lab tours to high school and college students.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
