Duties
Performs recurring and non-recurring maintenance on all electrical/electronic systems.
Understands policies to ensure safe and efficient operation of all mechanical, electrical/electronic, and air-conditioning/refrigeration equipment and systems.
Performs duties of the journeymen electricians and electronics technicians during periods of limited manning, excessive workloads and emergencies.
Provides technical guidance and monitoring using blueprints, sketches, diagrams, pamphlets, technical orders, bulletins, and other oral and written directives.
Takes necessary corrective action to resolve problems and advise others on possible solutions to various recommendations or requirements concerning staff or operations.
Understands principles and theories of electricity and electronics, heat, sound, mechanics and construction procedures, soldering, pumps, motors, etc.
Furnishes guidance on sequence of operation and technical guidance on repairs and interprets technical orders and specifications for subordinates.
Ensures installation, operation, maintenance, and repair on six emergency generators for life support systems and other electric powered equipment.
Ensures work performed shall be in accordance with hospital standards and shall in all cases meet and/or exceed safety requirements established by federal and state guidelines.
Reads and interprets electrical/electronic schematics and blueprints relating to electrical, and mechanical systems.
Utilizes manufacturer's publications, and other technical publications for the operation and construction of many different types and styles of equipment.
Refers to technical orders specifications, stock lists, and parts lists for purchasing and ordering.
Instructs and ensures workers use maintenance equipment and tools safely and properly.
Supervises electronic repairs, installation and repair of lights, light fixtures, outlets, and switches.
Maintains 6 diesel driven emergency generators and all related equipment such as transfer switches, controls, switchgear, etc.
Monitors equipment tests on new projects to ensure proper installation and to ensure equipment functions within the established parameters.
Recommends relocation of equipment, researches, and prepares procurement requests for new or replacement equipment.
Ensures electric shop employees are engaged in performing maintenance on all electronic equipment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Normally works at a desk and/or in the field. He/she may, from time to time, be subject to considerable standing, bending, and stooping. He/she may have to work overhead, outstretched, cramped, or in awkward positions for extended periods of time. The incumbent utilizes considerable arm movement in the use of different trade tools ( occasionally on a continuous basis). He/she may have to lift considerable weight up to 100 pounds. It is important for the incumbent to maintain a relatively healthy physical condition to withstand the rigorous intermittent physical demands placed upon him/her in all kinds of weather and conditions. Familiarizes self with how their activities impact VA's goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources. This may include activities associated with proper storage, handling and disposal and/or recycling of chemicals and wastes associated with their trades. In accordance with the goals of the VA GEMS program, seeks to cost-effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable Federal, state, and local environmental; public health; and resource protection laws, regulations, and VA requirements. Seeks to reduce or eliminate the use of Class I ozone-depleting substances (ODS) through source reduction, re-use, segregation, and recycling and by procuring recycled-content materials and environmentally preferable products and services consistent with Executive Order 13148, Greening the Government through Leadership in Environmental Management.
