Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the safe operation of all electrical systems and equipment by completing preventative maintenance on controllers, transformers, voltage regulators and machinery wiring.

  • Assists in maintaining emergency generator system-related equipment

  • Obtains electrical work permits

  • Must stay current on all City and County electrical codes

  • Works closely with contractors on site to ensure work performed meets current electrical codes

  • Makes suggestions and offers ideas for repairs of campus buildings

  • Installs new circuitry for equipment and lighting

  • Performs work assignments received, both verbal and through the work order software system

  • Maintains records of work performed using the work order management software system

  • Assists supervisor with inventory control

  • Performs work assignments to make campus facilities as safe and secure as possible for all students, staff and faculty

  • May, at times, be called upon to assist with snow removal

  • Performs related duties as assigned

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Trade School or Industrial Apprenticeship degree in Electric or Electronic Trades and two-three years of related experience. Certifications: Journeyman Electrician License.


Knowledge in electronics, troubleshooting, problem solving, equipment maintenance, power tools, life safety and technical understanding

  • Must know Chicago electrical codes and Cook County permitting requirements

  • Ability to follow manuals, schematic plans, blueprints, and other specifications required

  • Must have knowledge of City and/or County code requirements

  • Must have strong troubleshooting background

  • Ability to use tools of the trade

  • Ability to work in high and/or confined spaces

  • Ability to carry materials to perform work functions

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Must supply their own hand tools

  • Must be able to work irregular hours if needed, to perform job requirements

  • Must be able to work successfully with other trades to perform job duties

  • Preferred candidates would also have prior work experience in an University/research environment


  • Current Journeyman Electrician License, "A" Card in good standing

  • Current Chicago Supervising Electrician License or equivalent is required

  • Must have a current Driver's License in good standing

  • Must be in good standing with IUOE Local 399

Computer Skills

Knowledge and proficiency with computers

  • Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience with a work order management system preferred

Requisition ID : 11062 Job Description Electricians are responsible for electrical diagnostic tasks, repair, and reading blueprints as applicable to facility and diesel/electric locomotive maintenance. The electrician must be able to operate various tools and equipment. In addition, the electrician may also conduct routine maintenance, repair, and service of locomotives. Electricians are subject to working various shifts with the possibility of rest days being scheduled on non-weekend days. Electricians may be subject to working overtime which would be paid at the overtime rate. Norfolk Southern provides a 5-8 week long training program During the first 40 days of training, Electricians will earn 50% of the full rate of pay. Applicants who do not qualify as Journeymen are subject to a 2-year rate progression, after which they will receive full rates. The full union scale for Electricians is $30.11. The rate progression for Student Electricians is as outlined: Step Rates * 1st 40 Days of Training (50% of Full Rate) $15.01 -15.05 * Next 204 Days of Training (75% of Full Rate) $22.52-22.58 * Next 244 Days of Training (80% of Full Rate) $24.02 -24.08 * 100%/After 2 Years/488 Days (Journeyman) $30.03 -30.11 We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing.
