Under general supervision performs routine and complex tasks related to the inspection testing repair installation and modification of the Hospitals electrical systems equipment fixtures and appliances. May direct the work of Apprentice and Journeymen Electricians. Ensures that all electrical systems and equipment meet all legal codes and hospital standards requirements.
Responds to electrical trouble calls throughout the hospital inspecting and repairing a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment including lighting power distribution systems smoke and fire detectors fan motors etc.
Examines and tests distribution panels control circuit fixtures motor motor starts and specialized equipment such as electrical beds automatic valves and intercoms in order to locate malfunctions such as blown fuses short circuits broken wires loose connections and worn controls. Performs the testing and record keeping of receptacles centrifuges fire alarms smoke detectors OR alarms appliances and battery banks. Etc.
Repairs electrical circuits and equipment replacing faulty switches sockets plugs fuses insulators wiring and other components in the hospital electrical system. Troubleshoots electrical systems on conveyers trayveyors etc.
Conducts periodic testing including testing of OR equipment and performs preventive maintenance on motors generators circuits and other electrical equipment on a regularly scheduled basis. Works with ground detecting equipment in our OR rooms test and matins complex fire alarm systems and installs and maintains complex medical emergency alarms in OR rooms and throughout the hospital.
Fabricates installs and modifies systems including systems for renovations construction. Measures cuts bends threads wire through assembles and installs electrical conduit using hand and power tools runs cables tests connects and matins computer lines telephone lines fiber optic cables and local are networks.
May work under hazards conditions with voltages as high as 34500 V in tight quarters and wet locations on live gear. Works in wet manholes around 4160 V cables.
Works with banks of batteries of up to 125 volts which can be very complex systems. May operate high voltage switcher in case of power outages to transfer buildings to emergency power operates alarm systems exit and emergency lighting work properly.
May on occasion be asked to service equipment under tension and stress as quickly as possible. Patients survival could be at risk. Works in patient vicinity to repair and maintains electrical apparatus.
Studies blueprints wiring diagrams and instructions in order to assist in planning modifications to the electrical systems and in determining the supplies and tools required.
Coordinates schedules of work to be performed with departments affected in order to minimize inconvenience to patients and personnel.
Performs related record keeping activities such as recording time and materials expended on each work order.
Instructs and guides Apprentices while under his/her supervision. May be required to report to work at any time of day or night in response to emergencies. Also may be required to remain on site during emergency or disasters.
Requires a High School diploma or graduation from a trade school or vocational school with courses in math.
Requires courses in reading electricity information.
The ability to read blueprints and plan modifications to electrical systems.
The ability to troubleshoot electrical problems and find solutions to them.
Requires completion of three to four years Apprenticeship program or equivalent on-the-job training.
Possession of a valid Rhode Island Journeyman Electricians License.
Requires knowledge of all current City State and National Codes.
Must know hospital codes governing the electrical maintenance and installation in the all hospital complexes.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Continuous standing and walking occasional lifting climbing and pushing.
Occasional exposure to adverse elements such as inclement weather or contaminated areas when supervising employees and inspecting areas.
