JOB TITLE: ELECTRICIAN

MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under occasional supervision, performs skilled electrical maintenance and repair work in the maintenance of District schools and other facilities. Performs related work as required. Reports to the Coordinator of Maintenance.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs a variety of skilled electrical maintenance and repair tasks in the maintenance of District facilities, systems and equipment.

Tests malfunctioning electrical and/or electronic systems and equipment.

Coordinates work with and provides assistance to outside electrical contractors as needed.

Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and/or replaces conduit, wiring devices, computer cabling, circuit breakers, fuses, receptacles, interior and exterior lighting equipment, switch equipment, control panels, kitchen appliances, small motors, and all other electrical system equipment.

Inspects requests for service to determine cause of electrical problems and needed work.

Replaces faulty electrical components.

Performs preventive maintenance functions as appropriate.

Anticipates and requests supplies, materials and equipment necessary for maintenance and repair tasks. Cleans and maintains assigned vehicles, tools and equipment.

Maintains accurate and complete records of work completed and materials used.

Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly shop area.

Performs all duties in compliance with District and department policies, procedures and standards of quality and safety.

Receives and responds to concerns, complaints and inquiries in areas of responsibility.

Operates a vehicle, man lift, and a variety of equipment such as ladders, electrician's tools, meters, cable and pipe locators, various hand and power tools, etc.; uses hardware, spare parts and other maintenance supplies.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, coworkers, facility supervisors, District / school administrators and staff, vendors and service providers, contractors, and the general public.

Attends training, meetings, workshops, etc., as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Remains on call after regular working hours for emergency response.

Replaces light bulbs and ballasts as needed.

Assists supervisor in bidding and budgeting procedures.

Moves furniture and other heavy items as necessary.

Assists other building maintenance staff with tasks as necessary.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training supplemented by three to five years of electrical maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, stretching or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and instructions and receiving information and instructions from supervisor.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read work orders, technical instruction, diagrams, blueprints.

Requires the ability to prepare routine records with the proper format. Has the ability to speak before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form.

Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to teach employees. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the general public.

Numeric Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using shop equipment; to operate motor vehicles.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, switches, hand and power tools, measuring devices, etc. Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. Worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the School District as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Electrician.

Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Is able to follow complex oral and written instructions with minimal supervision. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

Has thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures of skilled electrical maintenance and repair work as it pertains to building maintenance functions. Has knowledge of the various electrical codes and ordinances related to building maintenance and construction. Is able to anticipate supplies, materials, tools and equipment needed for project completion and routine maintenance.

Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Is able to work effectively despite occasional exposure to heat / cold, odors, toxic agents / hazardous materials, noise, wetness, humidity, electric currents, machinery hazards, dusts, vibrations, working in confined and/or high spaces, etc. Is able to skillfully and safely operate assigned vehicles, equipment and tools.

Is able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams and other technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to provide effective instruction, leadership and coordination of assigned crew members. Has the ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.

Is able to prepare work records and reports with accuracy and in a timely manner. Has considerable knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Has knowledge of proper English usage; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.

Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.

Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
