Class Title: Electrician (Journeyperson)

Immediate Supervisor: Facilities Director and/or Assistant Director

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Director and/or Assistant Director perform routine and complex tasks installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures. Ensures that work is done in accordance with National Electric Code (NEC), State, and Municipal codes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on job specifications and municipal codes.
Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components. Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of systems.
Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps.
Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with applicable codes. Repairs electrical components and/or systems (e.g., motors, circuits, transformers, generators, compressors, switches, intercom systems, cafeteria/kitchen equipment).
Prepares sketches or follows blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance with building and safety codes.
Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
Works from ladders, scaffolds, scissor lifts or roofs to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures. Installs electrical system components (e.g., lighting, alarms, electrical panels, switches, circuits, scoreboards, timers, street signs) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded electrical capabilities.
Advises management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
Maintains current electrician's license to meet governmental regulations. Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.
Prepares written materials (e.g., repair status reports, activity logs) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
Requisitions equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete assigned tasks. Assists in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.
Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
Coordinates with other trades personnel and/or contractors for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently. Maintains and ensures assigned vehicle, equipment, and tools are in safe operations such as but not limited to snow removal operations
Experience with low voltage and fire alarm systems a plus but not required. Knowledge of Building Management Systems/ controls a plus but not required.
Gathers and provides information and pricing needed for projects designated by the Facilities/ Assistant Facilities Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams, blueprints and plan modifications to electrical systems. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Must be able to prioritize, organize and accomplish work under time constraints.
Thorough knowledge and skills in the use of the principles, practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in the electrician trade. Ability to interact effectively with vendors, management, and employees at all levels of the organization.
Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings or other structures.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Must be highly dependable, thorough, and pay close attention to details.
Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
Experience with low voltage and fire alarm systems is a plus but not required. Knowledge of Building Management Systems/ controls a plus but not required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; or graduation from a Trade or Vocational School.
Associate Degree in skilled trades is highly desirable. Must have a valid Rhode Island Journeyperson Class B Electrician License, and maintain such license as a condition of employment.
Completion of apprenticeship program or equivalent on-the-job training.
Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience. Must have a valid Driver's License.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently.

The employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear.
The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment up to seventy-five (75) pounds and/or move objects up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and color vision. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the HVAC and facilities maintenance trades.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently inspect the project and may be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to all weather conditions, especially hot, humid, warm, spring, summer and fall weather, combined with regular work time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud and hearing protection may be required.
The employee may be exposed to hazardous materials such as molds, various solvents, and electrical hazards.
