The City of Carson is seeking to hire an Electrician who is, proactive, has a safety-first mindset and problem solver. The ideal candidate should have a successful history working at a journey man level in commercial settings, such as office building, retail spaces or industrial facilities.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs journey-level electrical work in the repair, construction, installation, and maintenance of City electrical systems and equipment including high voltage; may supervise the work of subordinate staff serving as assistants on various projects; does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Inspect, repair, install, service and maintain electrical and lighting systems,

  • including conduit and duct systems, light and power circuits, motor appliances, generators, breaker panels, control equipment switches, switchboards, fans, heaters, fixtures, boilers and

  • clocks.

  • May oversee and assign the work of subordinate staff.

  • Install, maintain and repair equipment, pumps, pump motors, motor control panels and

  • related equipment

  • Maintain and repair heating and air conditioning equipment, refrigerators.

  • Drive and use aerial equipment to access light poles to repair or maintain electrical

  • equipment; may climb poles to perform electrical repairs.

  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment.

  • Install necessary interior and exterior wiring for equipment and appliances;

  • Wire new and altered buildings.

  • Perform troubleshooting work to locate defects in electrical systems.

  • Replace fuses, breakers, overloaded heaters.

  • Install, test and maintain intercommunication systems, public address systems.

  • Interpret electrical plans and specifications and check for conformity with codes, regulations and safety orders, prepare schematic drawings.

  • Keep material and cost records.

  • Estimate time and material costs of projects.

  • Order materials and supplies.

  • Perform related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance such as a formal apprentice program or equivalent training and four (4) years experience performing electrical work at the journey level. Experience and/or education may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, tools, terminology, materials and equipment of the electrical trade.

  • Design, construction, installation and maintenance of electrical and lighting equipment.

  • Electrical codes and related ordinances and regulations.

  • Electrical motors and control systems.

  • Safe work practices; use of aerial equipment.

  • Basic principles of supervision.

  • Basic record keeping practices.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Use electrical tools and equipment skillfully and safely; read and follow electrical plans and specifications.

  • Diagnose causes of electrical failure.

  • Wire and rewire electrical circuits, motors and panels.

  • Repair lighting, control and telemetering systems and motors, pumps and other electrical units, work with up to 480 volts AC.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work safely in hazardous locations and at heights; drive equipment which provides for aerial capability.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

  • Estimate time and material requirements for specific projects.

  • Work from aerial equipment or climb to work at considerable heights.

  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.

  • Supervise the work of assigned personnel.

  • May be subject to overtime, working weekends or call back.

License and/or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License. Must be able to obtain a Class B Driver's License if required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Recruitment Process

Supplemental questionnaires are used to evaluate applicants' indicated abilities with the ideal candidate profile. Applicants must achieve a cut-off score of 70% or above on the written and oral examination to be placed on the eligibility list. Passing the written and oral examination does not guarantee an invitation to the selection interview. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to invite those amongst the highest scoring to the next phase of the recruitment.

Medical Insurance

  • The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMOs and PPOs.

  • The City will pay the full family HMO premium from Kaiser Permanente of Los Angeles Region (including Riverside and San Bernardino counties) for each Unit member and eligible dependents. - a cafeteria cap of $200.00, per month, will be placed on any remaining premium monies.

  • Employees may elect to discontinue or not enroll in the health insurance program upon proof of equal coverage. If this option is selected, employees shall receive 75% of the lowest 2-party premium to be deposited into the employee's City-sponsored deferred compensation account.

Dental Insurance

  • The monthly dental premium is fully paid by the City.

  • Employees may elect to discontinue or not enroll in the dental insurance program. If this option is selected, employees shall receive 75% of the premium to be deposited into the employee's City-sponsored deferred compensation account.

Vision Insurance

  • Employees may elect vision care through payroll deduction from wages and/or with monies remaining from the sum provided for health insurance.

Life Insurance

  • $100,000.00 Basic Group Term Life Insurance premium paid by the City.

  • Employees may purchase Optional Group Term Life Insurance coverage and Dependent Life Insurance coverage through payroll deduction from wages and/or with monies remaining from the sum provided for health insurance.

  • Long-Term Care (optional)- Employees may purchase optional Long-Term Care through payroll deduction from wages and/or with monies remaining from the sum provided for health insurance.

Deferred Compensation

  • Deferred Compensation Plan is available, employee participation is optional.

  • Deferred Compensation City matches up to $500.00 per calendar year.
